Name recognition?

posted in education |

So, you have a painting, and it might be a portrait of a famous author. What next? After reading a story on the CBC website, I just don’t know. First of all, the author isn’t Shakespeare. So now we get into the “why bother?” section of the argument.

Well, the story says that this might be Jane Austen, and I guess she has fans. They make movies from her books, don’t they? I read nothing from her bibliography in high school, so if she deserves the title of great, someone missed their chance. And the only convincing proof that the article presents is that her dress is from the wrong period. Not convinced, yet.

In fact, I can’t think of a single author that I have read after seeing a portrait. Name recognition? Sure? Facial features? Nope. Has anyone written a book about this? It could be the inspiration for the next best-seller.

Moving along… I did visit a bookstore yesterday, and I bought nothing. My electronic library has pushed the need for paper aside. If my ebook reader breaks (battery failure is a risk), the price would allow me to have a replacement in a matter of days; hours, if I’m particularly driven. And that is without calling the laptop or the tablet in as reinforcements. And they do make movies about books. I haven’t read any of the JK Rowling collection, given the repeated showing on my TV. Game of Thrones? Unread and unseen. Don’t blame me; I live in a land where winter has already come, and until I see a flying dragon, down by the shore, I will assume it’s just a misshapen gull.
