But is it real?

Here’s a short test, for those of you with advanced academic credentials.

  • Where did you go to school?
  • What was the subject of your thesis?

Details of a habit

Just out for my, trip of the day, where the community mailbox fights my key. I win. However, I might have to change into long pants, because it is Dark and Cold out there.

Mastery of the lesson

Isn’t it ironic, that just as the campfire season draws to a close, we have some proper firewood? We received a gift (from people bound for a warmer section of the continent) of a half dozen proper log sections. The kind that will require splitting, once I find something that acts like an axe. No, I don’t intend to get all lumberjack and go off to the hardware store seeking a lethal weapon; there’s a dull hatchet in the garage, and that’s dangerous enough. Learning to sharpen steel is on my “to do list”.

Food delivery

For many years, I treated lunch lightly. There was a window of opportunity; I could have become a regular on the restaurant circuit near the office, buy my priorities were different. All water under the bridge, as they say. Yesterday, among our finds at the treasure sale, we added two tiffin-carriers to our basket, without understanding the significance.

If they were aurally acceptable

Hurrah! I got (my) shot, which should mean that the winter will be better. No need to lock myself in the basement, trying to avoid the unhealthy members of the herd. Didn’t get yours, yet? One can only ask why. The teeny-tiny needle didn’t hurt.

Sofa travel

Travel is risky. According to a report from the BBC, just riding in an airplane can play some serious shenanigans with your body. Makes you think, eh? However, there are other ways to experience the wonders of other places. This evening, I toured Bell Island (which is not the same as Belle Isle), and learned a few things along the way. Thank you, Jonny Harris! For those of you not “in the know”, Jonny hosts a TV series about small places in Canada that are worth the detour.

The cauldron stands

My age is showing (again). Right now, CBC radio is hosting a discussion on the relevance of Shakespeare to the curriculum, and I fear for the future generations.

The art of the table setter

Those (of us) who have retired find that we are great volunteers for the cause. Here I am, on a Friday morning, setting up a community hall for a banquet. One hundred and fifty places. The tables, the chairs, the linen covers, the flatware; all done in a couple of hours. When someone asked if I was a caterer in a former life, I took it as a compliment.

Flights of fancy

I’d like to rewind the movie (my movie), back to a time before “walking on the moon”. I attended elementary school in a room filled not by numbers but by grade levels. Five of them. We had one teacher, so a certain level of self-motivation was expected. Of course, small boys can’t focus on arithmetic and phonics for long stretches, so I flew a rocket ship.

Exotic cuisine and statistics

Vacations are, by design, short and meant to be lived to the fullest. Hence, the kid and I went out to eat, again this evening. Exotic cuisine: donairs, prepared by a young lady who was fixated on getting a telephone number to contact us when our order was ready. I explained that such a measure was unnecessary, and so she used her own. Forms must be completed, in that wage bracket.
