Sofa travel
Travel is risky. According to a report from the BBC, just riding in an airplane can play some serious shenanigans with your body. Makes you think, eh? However, there are other ways to experience the wonders of other places. This evening, I toured Bell Island (which is not the same as Belle Isle), and learned a few things along the way. Thank you, Jonny Harris! For those of you not “in the know”, Jonny hosts a TV series about small places in Canada that are worth the detour.
I’d already taken the time to look around, via Google Earth, after hearing that there were mine entrances visible in the cliffs. Sure, I didn’t get a great look, but I didn’t fall down any mismarked holes. That’s positive. In fact, I’ve taken quite a liking to virtual tours. No passport waving required. No need to wear appropriate footwear, or learn the intricacies of local tip rules. Best of all, I can sleep in my own bed. Travel for the homebody.
Anyhow, I’ve figured out that visiting other places might require air time (see paragraph one), and until the rail lines go where I want to go, at a price I want to pay, I’m going to don my seven league boots according to my own rules. There used to be a TV show, circa 1959, so the idea is not original. Just highly practical. And I feel quite proud of myself for remembering a series that I watched before I could even read. Guess the theme music stayed with me…
