A not-so-instant transfer

Ever watched one of those Hollywood blockbusters, where the hero sits at the computer terminal, types in a few digits and whisks a fortune around the globe to a secret bank account? Based on our afternoon, it has little to do with reality. Moving money is much harder “in real life”.

When the beach disappears

Blow, wind, blow! Blow tents over the edge. Blow the ocean up over the beach. Blow like you haven’t for a whole month. No blaming some far off named storm. This is the start of the end of summer.

Choose your reference point (carefully)

We all have opinions. With some exception, we share them with others. What do you think of that restaurant, or car, or vacation destination, or book, or movie, or… ? Endless possibilities. And given human nature, the range of opinions runs full spectrum.

Cooking with gas

“Now we’re cooking with gas!”. Had a university prof that used this expression. I had no direct frame of reference, but it sounded like a good idea. Filed it, forgot it, until now.

Over here, a side-door model

I was prepared, if copying addresses from Yellow Pages listings counts. The amount of new information I had on hand after driving in and out and up and down the road; minimal. The intent was to lean more about ICF. The result came down to a simple realization that finding a qualified contractor will depend on luck and personal recommendations. Take that, Cult of the Phonebook.

The house was right over there

Not sure if the dog appreciated my choice of “a good place for his morning constitutional”. He didn’t say anything, but that curious wiggle when he squatted had to involve the cloud of skeeters. I found a geocache, without my GPS.

Music is its own excuse

It wasn’t an impulse purchase; it was a rational need. I am being held prisoner in a dog-controlled room, and the lack of musical opportunity made me detour into that music store up the road. No impulse, either, because I waited a full ninety minutes for the store to open. OK, maybe there was some spontaneous behaviour, but the price was excellent. $50 for a Line 6 Mobile Keys 25… That comes out to $2/key, and I had the necessary cabling and related software and… OK, it followed me home. Final version.

New place to call “home”

Even storms run out of juice. By dawn the winds had died, and the sky cleared up for a good day of travel. Good, not long. Other than a quick calorie boost near the magnetic hill, we were on our way to the Island without pause. I couldn’t convince the driver to detour through good old “Torment In Time” and so we started the afternoon with a refreshing bridge transit.

The bear and the cupcakes

Soon the sun will set. There is still a side of lawn to mow, and the pool ladder is high and dry. So, this is what being on holidays is like? Seems much the same as real life.

Autoclosure on a service ticket

I’m adding this one to the “learned too late to use” category of life skills. Last week, I contacted the US support team for our faulty display sign module. Within a couple of hours, an automated email with some suggestions on how to roll back time. And then, nothing else until this morning. Another automated message stating that since there had been no “activity” on this service request for three days, it was now classified as solved and closed.
