In a play on a song from my childhood, I learned that there was “No Mulch Today”Every couple of seasons, the flower beds require a facelift, and bags filled with mulch are an acceptable material. And so, off I went to shop. Didn’t find any (in the usual places), but I did have the chance to see how local retail has responded to the pandemic

Living at the end of the road, I take my connections to the outside world very seriously. Two nights now, the electricity has gone off, reminding me of the wisdom of having installed “genny” in the back yard. My neighbours aren’t as protected from the cold and the dark. Similarly, the tenuous connection to the Internet means accepting no news at times.

Here we are, late in the afternoon on the final weekend in June. Only because FB brought it to my attention, I realized that the amateur radio community on this continent is starting to clean up from another Field Day exercise. This is one of those events where I should have got involved; I have the time, the field, the equipment and the knowledge. Trapped in my bubble, I haven’t even plugged in the radio. Next year.

Not simply a reference to a Led Zeppelin air, I guess. Caught a news clip from a legislative hearing somewhere in the sunny south: did you know that wearing a surgical mask is an affront to the “beautiful breathing created by god”? Me neither. Picture a pack of fools, convened by a pack of lies.

There are a lot of unhappy people out there. In a moment of reckless abandon, I checked a suggested stream of misery on Twitter, by following the @crazykarens tag. Wow! Give these folks a shovel, and they’d find the long way to the antipodes. Meanwhile, everyone else along the way would get a taste of their venom. Too much, on such a lovely day.

NO more jokes from here about “slow boats from China”. Today, I briefly held a parcel that was received by Canada Post on the 15th of May past. With an expected travel time of just under a week, you can see that something went wrong.

I don’t actually follow the solar calendar. But, today is the solstice, and that’s probably why I found myself sitting in the shadow of a small lighthouse, looking out over the harbor and enjoying a take-away supper. A picnic, if you will. The local restaurants (diminishing in number) aren’t doing table service just yet, and so our menu choices were ordered by phone and delivered in a brown bag out the back door. How do you rate that service on Yelp, I wonder?

There’s an odd rivalry between the rail companies and the pipeline companies, here in Canada. Both will tell you, loudly, that we need crude oil “transported”. And both will ignore the two realities; the need for crude oil transportation is lessening, and they’re both not very good at it. Think about this.

More and more, I am taking the time to see if there is a back-story to the front-story. On CBC, shock that a bank would want a woman to pay $30K for abruptly breaking her mortgage. Now, one of my kids would love to be a landowner, so I tend to check stories involving the dreaded costs of ownership.

Up front, a confession. I don’t fly. No wings. And, by extension, no frequent flyer points. The industry has sales techniques that I find rather sketchy. In fact, I’ll go a step more. I find them to be merciless.
