My return to retail

posted in economy, science |

In a play on a song from my childhood, I learned that there was “No Mulch Today”Every couple of seasons, the flower beds require a facelift, and bags filled with mulch are an acceptable material. And so, off I went to shop. Didn’t find any (in the usual places), but I did have the chance to see how local retail has responded to the pandemic

First of all, I have to congratulate my local grocery store and my local hardware outlet. They’ve done a great job, what with plexiglass screens, turnstiles that require an application of hand sanitizer, clear markings on the floor to keep me from getting lost on the way to the cash. I found myself worrying about what would happen if I had to recheck a shelf. Would it mean returning to start, like some warped game of Snakes and Ladders?

My time in retail was short, but effective. Early in the week, I was pretty much on my own. Less chance of crossing someone who could slay me with an airborne burst of droplets. For the record, masks aren’t a “thing”, locally. I’m sure that will change, as we move into summer.

Now, back at home, I’m letting the wave of anxiety subside. Maybe I’ll shop again, without waiting several months until the next time. Wouldn’t that be the best way to get “a return to normalcy”?

There’s a new comet in town. The local astronomy feed on CBC has given a head’s up: look to the little dipper and see if you can spot the spot. It’s not big, yet, but we have months ahead with nothing better to do, than watch for NEOWISE.
