No sense in rushing towards a change of seasons around here. I mean, even if this is the closest we’ve had to May in March since I moved to the city, and even if the law now permits changing the winter tires out for something less cumbersome, this is the great white North. By lunch time, the ground was covered; by quitting time, I wished for my mitts.

For someone that wants a guide to life (as if the Douglas Adams library isn’t already enough), here’s a thought. Why not collect the various pieces of advice sent down from “on high” by the judges of American Idol.

Channel the stress. That’s my way of handling this very important week in the world of AI9. The countdown to the final 24 is too big to be left to the competitors. Next time around, I’ll help with the Olympics.

Some things just don’t fit. Decisions made by committee. Ballroom dancing in a trio. American Idol in a group. Tonight, like each preceding year, showed just how painful trying to fit individual (large) egos into a happy, harmonious amalgam can be for all involved.

Transportation news kept me on the edge of my chair all afternoon. Canadian transportation news; how often is that newsworthy?

Four evenings of the annual audition ordeal have passed. Last week, we had some useful input from the guest judges (Posh and Mary J Blige) but this week was a placeholder effort. I mean, come on. Shania Twain gave back polite platitudes to the Chicago supplicants, and Kristin Chenoweth (who?) didn’t even stay for the second segment of tonight’s effort from Orlando. Yawn.

Two hours in to the new season and I feel better already. Nine thousand hopefuls in Boston, and some actually got through. The train has left the station.

Twenty years is a good, long run. Tonight, my prized lawn mower gave up the gears, and is no more. Lots of spin and sound, but the cut wasn’t exactly the deepest. I’d come home last evening to the news that the grass was still in grow mode because there was no power available at the curb. Tests on the extension cords showed that all was in order, but still my pretty pink powertool wasn’t particularly useful. The transmission was over and done.

Time to rant. Television is supposed to serve as a diversion during prime time. Fun, laughs. So what is this obsession with shows devoted to police techniques and courtroom filibustering? Why is the world going CSI? This afternoon, some of the shows that won’t be back next season were announced. Next season is losing another block of silliness.

Long live rock and roll. Or, if you will, rock and roll lives long. This summer marks the 40th anniversary of Woodstock, and a number of optimistic reports in the mainstream media point to a big concert (or two or three) sometime in late August (or perhaps October). The cool part is that many of the headline acts from the summer of ’69 are going to be back for the reprise. Proof that good music does keep one healthy. Just ignore the names that are absent because of other priorities (we can’t all live forever).
