To those in charge of winter travel conditions: my neighbours and I are hardy. We will go out after a heavy snowfall, that hasn’t been plowed, and make our way to our destinations. However, if you throw in power failures that remove the calming power of the red light / green light sequence, things will quickly degrade. I was eleven minutes late for work. Can you sense the gloating nature? I was there before the rest of the team, because I put my faith in city transit and their big Tonka toys. Slide aside, tiny cars!

Trepidation with a pinch of anticipation; my reaction to a forecast of freezing rain. After that debacle in the western portion of the province some years back, the idea of ice on vertical surfaces is not something I take lightly. Instead, I sleep lightly, ready to jump from my bed to do battle. Or something. How do you defend your world against something as heavy of consequence.

Yes, I understand and respect the decorum demanded of parliamentarians. That said, sometimes you just have to call it as you see it. Thank you, Justin.

Among the silly things I learned today; if you lock your cellphone and forget the password, then you’ve complicated your life. One of our corporate loaners is protected (for now). Removing the battery and the SIM won’t do it, and Google didn’t reveal a magic master code. The phone will take a trip back to Bell, at who knows what cost.

Two years ago, we decided to change the way one particular job “got done”. Forget the assisted technology. We were going to mow the lawn with an old school, push it and pray, reel mower. Two summers have gone by, and today the first cut of the season beckoned. Alas, the mower has gone into hiding. Three person search teams, a grid pattern, nothing to show for the effort. Tomorrow, or the next, we’re going to buy a new lawn mower.

A minute ago, James Durban left the stage. Once again, Idol eats its young, and the best don’t survive. More’s the pity. Bringing it 110% isn’t enough. The next Idol is going to be young, good looking, exactly what the machine wants to market. And in counterpoint, the show gave Steve Tyler a showcase for his new video.

Just as in hockey, a great save doesn’t win the Idol game. At least, not for Casey Abrams, who was sent home this evening. Funny how talent is not enough in the media game, because he was the whole package. The kind of guy you’d want at your jam session. And in return for constantly “delivering the merchandise”, he’s now a statistic.

The Idol competition is one of attrition. Start with a huge mass, scrape away the peeling, remove the sections, one by one until all that remains is a single (hopefully full of talent) core. The process is slow, so I took a few weeks off, but I came back to my seat in the audience this evening.

Three weeks of auditions are over, and there it is: a kinder, gentler Idol. No sense in trying to guess how much talent there will be this season, but at least the judges are doing their part to be nice. What happened?
