Common sense?

On a quiet afternoon, I found myself sitting back and listening to a news conference. Our news conference, as a province. We are all learning to hit pause on our routine, when the health officer calls us together.

Preparing for the war

My travel through the tunnel continues. I’m referring to Halt And Catch Fire. Time travel, starting back at the DOS prompt.

Trying to see through the mist

Unexpected shift in my window on the world: suddenly, I feel like I’m a prisoner, but that the view from the window has faded to a flat gray. I just want things to get back to normal. In part, I deal poorly with noise, and living in an construction site isn’t recommended for that take on things. When the contractor, who does his best to accommodate us, showed up after dark (easy to do, now that we’re heading straight into that seasonal disorder called lack of long days), I felt trapped. In my own home. The power saw, power nailer, power everything ups the ambient noise level to something I just want to end.

(Being asked to) hold our course

We become complacent. We figure that someone else (at a different pay grade) will do the heavy hauling. And then the whole world gets slapped. War, pestilence, pandemic. Pick your monstrous moment.

An interesting side effect

Another day in my quiet world. You know, I was probably less isolated when I lived on a tiny island, decades ago. Although, to be fair, that was a different time and place. I had daily responsibilities, and coming into contact with others was a requirement. Now, I hear cars go by on the main road, and sometimes there’s a delivery van stopped to drop parcels. That’s pretty much all of it.

Mask at the ready

This afternoon, in Montreal, someone phoned the police to report a hostage situation. At the headquarters of a top computer gaming company. Turned out to be a hoax, but it shows you how quickly things can turn sour. Meanwhile, to the south, the defeated president continues with his game plan (holding the nation hostage, waiting for him to concede). Come on, there are better games available.

Pain distracts

Slowly, we’re returning to a near normal existence. This evening, our annual general meeting for the community group was held. Six months late, but we’re dealing with things at a different pace.

Time to pick some names

Soon… the first weather forecast model for the season shows snow, within the week. No big stress, because that first bit rarely stays. Also, I have no place to go, so as long as I remember to get some food beforehand, it will just be a bookend to the season.

Another tiny hole

Another day, another tiny hole in my arm. As contracted, the pharmacy furnished my flu shot. For free. All I had to do was provide my provincial ID and show up at the right time and place. I like my socialized medicine. And given my “advanced age”, I received the SuperShot. Left my spouse jealous, because obviously I will be “better” at any combat during the winter. I have no intention of coming into contact with the bug, now that I have the quarantine mindset, but I’m careful (and willing to take better doses of vaccine, when offered.)

Contemplating a virtual meal

On the job danger; not always evident. Right now, the federal government is trying to explain how shipyard workers came into contact with lead-based paints in vessels purchased in Europe and sent for refit. Months of contact with lead-based paints. The horror!
