A working holiday

Today was a working holiday. After spending late hours at the office, I finally recovered some time for myself, and promptly got nominated to the position of “official prepare the car for spring” guy. No big deal, given that it only happens once a year; I have another 11 months and a bit to prepare for next time around. All in all, a chance to “hang out” in a couple of different garages while someone else did the hard work.

A tiny hole in the pipe

One of those strange synchronistic moments came this evening as I flipped through the channels. On a local news outlet, the report that the refinery across the river had a slight leak, due to a fissure in a pipeline. Ever since yesterday afternoon, when someone happened to notice some new black on white detailing on a hillside heading down toward the river, the crews have been working hard to “pick up” an estimated 8000 litres of viscous oil. [[On February 01, the refinery updated their estimate to 200,000 litres; time to replace the calculator battery]]

Bleak forecasts

The Internet. Where only fear reigns supreme. If it sounds like the tagline from an upcoming movie, it’s because I have big plans for the rest of you. That is, if they don’t turn off the lights and hide my share of the world’s plastics first.

Models of the mediocrity principle

Wikipedia defines the mediocrity principle as the notion that there is nothing special about humans or the earth. Today offered me two different but complementary examples. Without placing myself among these others (and I’m the first to admit that I follow a path that is in the middle of the road wherever possible), I will cite them and their exemplary behaviour.

From this, the rumour of a curse arose

Explaining any chain of related activities can use one of two directions, the scientific and the illogic. My studies in philosophy stopped too early in life to have learned any other, so those of you who are on your way to a true PhD can simply abstain from comment.

Check the oil with that, sir?

This is not a reprise: Any time that resources are limited, the abuses seem to rise. Just check the gas pump prices (currently at 1.23/litre for regular around here).

In a holding pattern

We should have been “en route” by now, but group dynamics came into play. One might have an exam, another needed maintenance, another is incoherent while sleep-deprived. Anyhow, the daylight hours are gone, another quick meal is in the prep stages, and the idea of driving all night seems to have caught only my interest. The oil has been changed, so that part of the polynomial equation has been cancelled (so that’s what those endless hours in math class were all about. Who knew?)
