With a destination (finally) in view, we were a goal-directed group of voyageurs this morning, leaving our camp (a motel room with continental breakfast) for the portage across northern New Brunswick. The roads are great, but the vast stretches of fence without wire (I know, they’ll fix that part) to keep the moose in custody seemed odd, especially after three weeks on the Island where moose and deer are only found in encyclopediae. Perhaps the animals are so large that they catch their shoulders on the fenceposts and the wire is not needed. The signs with an antlered beast towering over a car would leave you with that impression.

The campsite went from sleeping people to cargo in just under two hours this morning. Not record time, just enough to allow us to say the requisite goodbye to the keeper of the gate and find our route through Pisquid and on to the boat. We didn’t make any land claims.

Proof of concept: take a really successful animated TV program and try to create a feature movie with live actors. The Simpsons are in town. So are we, with the thermometer stuck at close to mean body temperature. For those that do, the cinema provides a dark cave for the afternoon.

We’ve been out on some back roads today. Our fault; we thought that the destination was simple to find and left all our clues at home. With no white pebbles or breadcrumbs to lead the way, we used the GPS to drive in progressively tighter circles.

There. I’ve decided not to race headlong towards relaxation. Instead, I’m going to take the time to breathe, and clean out the refrigerator, and try to find all the camping stuff before we leave. It’s like an epiphany.

In one week the traps will be on the bottom, filling up with those expensive little buggies that make the tourists all weak at the knees. At least, that’s the hope. You see, in certain coastal areas the annual lobster season will begin at dawn on the first of May, and hundreds, nay thousands of fisher people will again pray for healthy harvests and high prices. Think of a very wet gold rush, with no gold but lots of wet. There you are, lobster fishing.

Ever watch TV when they show a series of time-lapse photos? You know, stuff like flowers opening, or a building going up, or cars at night? Inspirational photography, because it demonstrates that if you stand in one place long enough, something will happen.

The whole family went out for a drive today. Pretty rare occasion. Even had to put another seat back in the van, to show how seldom we’re all in the same vehicle these days. We were on the road to a birthday celebration; my father-in-law is up to the four score point. Doesn’t happen that often. We even managed to find some special balloons, after a bit of research.

Given that the weather was good and the day had nothing else that offered a constraint, (things like going to work) the parents took occasion to go visit the parents.

My life is ruled by adaptors. Has been ever since I discovered technology back in the era of the B-Battery. Will be until I get adapted at the funeral home to fit into some space other than one of my choosing. Such is the price of the person who embraces technology.
