Time lapsed photography

posted in environment, media |

Ever watch TV when they show a series of time-lapse photos? You know, stuff like flowers opening, or a building going up, or cars at night? Inspirational photography, because it demonstrates that if you stand in one place long enough, something will happen.

Well, like any photographer, I have created a few of these sequences, but none in a long time. So, I’m starting a new one. Actually, I started this one a year ago, but I think it is going to take a long time (in terms of calendars) before I have a sequence. So far, I have two photos, taken exactly one year apart.

Two is the beginning of a sequence. I now have to set my virtual alarm clock, to remember to take a third one in just less than 365 days, and so on and so on. The EXIF data in a pic I had on file reminded me that the anniversary would be today after work. The camera was here, the batteries were charged and I wasn’t distracted by other things like good TV or cooking supper or a phone call from the “BLOCKED CALL” fellow that phoned recently. The one that asked if I spoke French, and I asked him “Do I have to?” which confused him enough that he thanked me and hung up without any further discussion. But I digress.

So here I am, outside without any rain falling, and a printout of the first photo so that I could set things up without digging out the GPS and an az/el calculator. Easy as catching fish in a trout pond. My new “time lapsed” (one year and counting) sequence is born.

So, without further delay, here are two shots of the houses across the street. I hope they don’t mind. You’ll notice that neither owner has cut down any trees, added a flag pole or otherwise distracted my otherwise banal demonstration that we have less snow accumulated this year. I’ll let you figure out which picture is older…
