Her voice made a believer out of me. The tone rarely varied, but her directions were concise and, to a certain point, worth following.

I remember one particular toy with great fondness: the punching bag clown. You lashed out, he went down and then came right back up, without hesitation. This year, our vacation has that aspect. We should have been homeward bound early today, but I’m currently in downtown Halifax. The vacation continues!

We spent the afternoon hanging around the train station, watching the two passenger trains come and go. Only one derailment while we were around, due to an enthusiastic gentleman in the last car, but the crew simply lifted the trucks back on the rails and off they went, down an impossibly steep grade. Son #3 made the trip, and reported new infrastructure. I was too busy chattin’ up the ladies in the waiting room to get on board, but I caught up on all the local news.

Life should include new and exciting experiences, so today we visited a factory outlet store for the first time. I know, I know, for those that live in the industrial heartland, or near an international border, such things are common practice. I am on the Island.

Either it’s an insult or a blessing, when someone offers to “draw you a map”. For those who are often away from home, the road map is a necessity, even when the information has become dated and inaccurate. After all, major roads don’t change direction (often) and the various jurisdictions don’t change the numbering system (often), so if your “personal origami project” is reasonably recent, there’s a chance that you’ll be able to navigate from point A to B.

Today was a comedy of technical errors. I wear egg easily, as I’ve had a lifetime of opportunity, and self-deprecation (there’s that wonderful word again) is a virtue. Really. Here’s my story.

Settle down; I’m not there and I don’t have the money to enjoy what has been introduced, but CES 2008 is underway. Neat new toys for the boys in about six months, when my local big box store will have some of the articles in stock. Until then, I can fantasize about how much better my life would be with a new 150 inch TV, running some neat Blu-ray movie in surround sound through 78 inch speaker stacks. Wait, my house isn’t even big enough!

A quick search this evening revealed that the “proper name” for someone who likes maps is a cartophile. No Wiki reference, yet, but everything comes along in time. Remember, I started with maps at a very early age; there wasn’t much else for a pre-reader in the CNR stations a lifetime ago. A map of the rail route, with each station as a circle. I’ve since learned that there’s a whole other story behind the maps that the railways produced in those times. Anyhow, let’s blame it on Hansel and Gretel, dropping crumbs and pebbles to mark their route. Blame the pigeons for the rest.

Now there… I’m gone and home again, all in the same day. Made two trips through “le parc” with nary a flurry or a moose on the lam. Bus riding works.

The end of the trip blues have hit, even though the road to home is still hours long. The motel in Rivere-Madeleine was a quick packup. Coffee in Ste-Anne-des-Monts was even quicker, and then we started the last leg of the Gaspé.
