Economic speculation

How rich would I be if I invested six more weeks of my life? The question is rhetorical, but there’s a seed idea behind it. With just over two hundred more days to go before my intended retirement date, the idea resurfaced (this morning) of a departure in about one hundred and sixty. When I am actuarily eligible. At play; a slight reduction in revenues, for the rest of my life, in return for a few days less in the cubicle.

Income trumps excise

With a quick supper out of the way, the time was at hand. A timed, final exam. Out of ten MOOC efforts, the only one with a sudden death aspect. Some stress, sure. With a hard deadline approaching, it was “now or never”. And for the record, I managed to hold my average. Mind you, this is only 30% of the grade, but I know how I’ve done on other sections. Unless the peer markers go dancing wild on my back, I have another ribbon to hang on the virtual wall.

The quiet calm of composition

Without any direct experience, I imagine that our house, today, is akin to a scriptorium. No ink spills, or vellum. This is the Modern Age. Instead of the scratching of quill pens, there’s the muffled clicking of a laptop keyboard, and an even lower mechanical chatter of two hard drives, busily exchanging a terabyte of data on a table.

Explore the market, checking for fleas

The weather did go to “summertime great” today; wish there was a beach within hailing distance. Instead, I tucked the thought into a mental corner and compensated. Shorts. Walking barefoot in the grass. Checking the pool, to see if the murky waters are clearing (a little). Decided  to use my exploring time and take a trip to the flea market.

Dress up and make nice

Put your arms in the air (like you just don’t care). Or like someone who is trying to fix a stupid display unit, mounted above his head, with a century-old safe in the way. I spent pretty much the whole day at work trying to debug something that shouldn’t be broken. Even dragged others into my orbit, and phoned the supplier for advice. When I left at the end of the afternoon, things still didn’t work, and I just didn’t care. End of story.

Caught in the process

Let’s see how patient I really am. This time around the post will be written with one finger; other than an irritating audible feedback (I prefer haptic) it works. Rather like Morse code. Almost cathartic.

Software artefacts

In any large computer network system, there is a risk of artefacts. Things change, and housekeeping gets lackadaisical. Consider the drawer of many wonders in your own home (everyone has at least one). Networks are like that.

Traffic in all its glory

In the news tonight, Quebec City is cited for having some of the worst traffic congestion in the land. The telling statistic: 540,000 cars for a population of approximately 700,000 souls, all told. Thankfully, babies aren’t eligible for anything with a steering wheel, or we’d really have problems. My sympathy to all those who insist on bringing their own Fortress of Solitude wherever they go…

Hard to stay on task

A restless night followed by a restless day. Happily, there wasn’t much “going on”, and I made it through to the end of the day. Now to concentrate on an assignment in Mapping that eludes me. I have read the description, and I have no idea how to proceed.

“Everything is Awesome”

Thanks to a carefully orchestrated intervention in the biosphere, summer has been saved. That’s an alternative way to say that I turned the pool filter on this afternoon, and after the purchase of (yet) another pressure gauge, all is in order. The water may be a distasteful shade of green (or brown, I am not sure), but with a few days of filtration and some chemical shock…
