When the wagers must finally be paid off

And the decision is in; the American government has declined to bankroll the gambling professionals, and the sky is falling (if you listen and believe the gang that feels they deserve everyone else’s money). Maybe I’m not rich enough, but the idea of taking money you can’t afford to lose and then gambling it (away) has always seemed like a loser’s lot.

Flight log

The roadtrip is over; I’m gone and back again, all in the same day, and the only sign of my having left the house is the knowledge that travel isn’t as hard as it seems. I had the restless night before, and the mad scramble around a large international airport trying to find the correct FBO, but in the end it came down to hours of cloud watching.

Too bored to even sleep

This is one of those “nothing on” evenings. Just like a TV, where there’s a myriad of channels with nothing on, I’m in a grey funk. Nothing on. Tomorrow I’m travelling and this evening there’s a ton of laundry (figuratively), but the machine can only process so many pieces per load. Fill it full, and things just sit there, soggy and soapy. Moderation is needed.

Finding the hills in full colour

Even we “hue-challenged” people enjoy fall colours, and I’m back after an afternoon in the hills. Due to a shortfall in my planning, we may have travelled further afield than expected, but I can tell you that the section of the Eastern Townships we visited was glorious; hilly, serpentine and clothed in reds, greens, yellows and mixtures of all. Fall rocks!

A dogfight on the living room wall

Forget Top Gun. There’s a dogfight going on over my living room, and I’m ready to take my Gravol now. Since sometime yesterday, the tactical comms channel reminds me that the enemy is ready to lock on and blow me out of the sky. My gaming children are deep in the game/movie called Ace Combat 6, and I’m impressed.

In for windy weather

We might be in for windy weather. Ever since we realized (due to family members that have a pied-à-terre in coastal Florida) that hurricanes bear watching, the various forecasts and storm tracks and CNNian doom and gloom shows have become part of the autumn entertainment lineup. Well, sometimes a storm doesn’t try to hide its flank on the Mexican beaches.

Fit the suit their father wore

It starts really early in our cycle of life. We’re born, we get clothes, we outgrow them. Worse, the odds are that most of us will continue to do so for the majority of our lifetime. Check your closet, or the bottom drawer where the smaller sweaters and shorts tend to hide from public view. Put it down to shrinkage (yeah, sure) or evolution (I believe); clothes will not fit properly forever.

Really big numbers

On the TV screen, the station just presented one of those annoying branding ads, pointing out that the potential win for tomorrow night’s lottery drawing. I don’t do lottery; the mathematical odds keep me alert to any scam run at the government level. For the sake of perspective, this time around the windfall would be fourteen million. That’s 14 plus 6 zeros: enough money to fulfill a few dreams in the time I have left. No need for pension fund worries.

We should wait for the bus, another time

It’s just a thought, but if the transit systems of our world want to cajole some of those automobile automatons onto the bus, there are a few things that will have to be done better. Today was “Leave Your Car At Home” day in many cities, including this one. Based on what i saw this afternoon, it wasn’t a big success.

Inlay of the counterpoise

With a beautiful afternoon in view, I rustled up the help and headed out to the ranch. A good opportunity to lay a counterpoise. A lost art, some might declare, but for those who wish to contact the “outside world” with a multiband vertical antenna, the ground plane is necessary. With the lead (three to four long anxious weeks) time before the actual delivery of my Hy-Gain DX-88, I’ve been busy.
