By road, it’s less than a day’s drive, but musically I live a world away from my roots. If I was to depend on local media, or the choice in the record shop, I’d never hear the sounds of my culture, with one exception. This has been ECMA night, and CBC brought me two hours of a great musical weekend. Thank you.

Sometimes I have to grit my teeth at the insanity of the press. Granted we all devour the details served up by the editors, but for those confronted by a sea of microphones and tiny digital recorders, the desire to lash out has to be intense. To understand what I’m upset about, try to tune in to a live press conference sometime.

Some days I pine for the tranquil period in web development when Lynx was sufficient to allow a surfer to enjoy the full range of content available via our 14.4 dialup access. Those times are long since past. As we plunge headlong towards a 2.0 environment, it’s worth examining briefly the virtual world.

Here we are, basking in the calm after the storm. For those who didn’t know, it is a myth that you can’t have a snow storm with really cold temperatures. A myth, I tell you. Although the weather observers have declared an accumulation of 45 cm, the reality is that there is a variation depending upon where your car is parked; there the total appears to be much greater. As well, I am glad the dog has a long tail. It is proving useful for tracking her progress as she mimics a submarine in shallow waters.

It’s all about the presentation. Under the shadow of a really big storm, hoping like any other little kid that the radio would announce school closure. Staying under that shadow, watching the approach of a maybe really big storm through the day via various webcams and hoping the office manager would send us home before any danger presented itself. Home to watch the “red screens” on the weather channel. It’s all about the presentation, and this storm is slow in arriving.

One of the first rules in business is to know your clients, and by extension, their tastes. No sense selling what won’t be bought. I have to wonder; is the potato chip a reference point for those trying to identify demographic change? No reason to wait for Stats Can to deliver up another of their costly door-to-door campaigns, just check out the rack at the local corner store.

Should you happen to share your home with any animal, you will have noted that a great deal of energy is spent in the structure of sleeping. Seriously, try to find a pet that doesn’t “own” the most comfortable bed in the house, and that doesn’t make the best possible use of time and place. There may be a reason; animals aren’t “born lazy”.

Hindsight is priceless. I’m at the age where I can reflect on choices made decades ago, and present evidence that my decisions are still “right” in the present context. Finally, a good reason for age!

My good friend, Mr. Eastwood, has been involved in interesting cinema for about as long as I’ve been a movie goer (let’s not quibble over the minor detail that I no longer go to the movies; the movies come to me). From that ride in the back of JT’s Scout to see one of the sphagetti westerns, through Play Misty For Me (might be the only true scary movie), around the corner past any punk that might want to make my day, and more, and more. As he ages, he also seems to be developing the sort of conscience that permits him to tweak the elephant’s long nose.

Explaining any chain of related activities can use one of two directions, the scientific and the illogic. My studies in philosophy stopped too early in life to have learned any other, so those of you who are on your way to a true PhD can simply abstain from comment.
