Remote access for the novelty

Another example of how fast time goes by (when you’re a little older; at the tender edge of life, time seems limitless). Today, while someone was cleaning out accumulated files, he unearthed a letter announcing a retirement. In fact, the last one in our office group. Seven years ago, today. Seems like only a few weeks ago. I was also intrigued to read that the retiree had the same number of years of service as I do (now). Maybe my dream of changing profession isn’t that “off the wall”, after all.

Improving the pie

Another quiet evening. Nobody else to talk to but the dog. He listens well…

Actually, I’m on my nerdiest behaviour. Had chicken wings for supper; not many, but it’s the thought that counts. And now I’m happily reconfiguring and upgrading the Pi. With a larger SD card, I have more storage space available. With a larger RAM chip. There’s the rub. The fireware on the tiny motherboard hasn’t been upgraded, and so I’m trying to work through the various scripts that other “pioneers” have made available. My keyboard is from the reject pile down in son #3’s room, and the keys repeat. Retyping commands is good practice, but hardly an effective use of time.

Got me a piece of pi

Remember when I said that I didn’t need a new computer “right now”; not exactly true. Although I’m willing to stay with my current laptop, life with only one comanputer is incomplete. Today, the UPS guy stopped by, and now, I’ve got me a piece of Raspberry Pi.

Certain companies prone conformance

While others in my clan dream of new gaming computers, I am content with my laptop. Why? Because I don’t game, and I just upgraded the hard drive. Easy. Although I deal with hardware all day long, and accept questions from the community on how they could be better equipped to face the difficulties of getting into the game, I’ve never been drawn in that direction. Faster video, more memory, whatever. Just throw money at the manufacturer, and your dream can be realized.

How about a pie-based PBX?

Go to work, in the rain. Come home from work, in the rain. Around this time of the season, snow starts to seem like a really good alternative to the urban transit user. Yes, the bus is on time. So am I. The time from the house to the stop is invariable. Did I mention that I hate umbrellas?

The origins of space rock

In a local version of “Be nice to your tech staff”, I had back to back phone calls this morning. The first, from a client. The second, from the phone company. Both making sure that all was well in my universe, because things weren’t broken in theirs. This doesn’t happen any more frequently than a “blue moon”, so I thought I’d mention it.

An end to supersize in the supercity

The city of New York has a new regulation pending. No selling glasses of soft drink that exceed an arbitrary limit of 16 ounces. No mention if the measure limits the ice cube filler. Anyhow, there will be no limit imposed on those patrons that wish to purchase more than two 8 ounce portions at a time. Do the math, if you can. The city obviously can’t.

Not having to practice what you preach

Missed the staff meeting today. As opposed to “a staff meeting”, this was one that was scheduled, announced, catered. Breakfast for the starving masses. Because, in the real world, there are always bigger priorities.

So rich, they don’t need (more) money

I think I should go to bed early. Actually, that’s been the feeling since dawn, but there was a work day in between. I’m laying the blame on my sore eye (the distracting one). And the heat, but that too shall pass.

The viral boogie

Time to take a break from The Dance. The musical interlude started this morning, when my desktop icons changed order and alignment. Yes, this is the wonderful world of Windows, where the next viral infection is just a step to the left…
