The viral boogie

posted in computing, photography |

Time to take a break from The Dance. The musical interlude started this morning, when my desktop icons changed order and alignment. Yes, this is the wonderful world of Windows, where the next viral infection is just a step to the left…

I felt secure. My trusty antivirus software was running and up to date. My risk taking was low (come on, checking the status of an incoming book order from Amazon is not exactly daring behaviour). And then, the computer decided to reboot and forget my identity. Not what I wanted, or needed.

Hours later, after changing the antivirus software for something equally cheap (and ineffective), I know that the “trojan” is familiar to many and as hard to remove as a bad cold. Going in via the Linux desktop didn’t provide much solace, although the backup of my data is now “recent”.

I’m busily trying to reinstall the OS, fully aware that I’m going to be dancing until I drop from exhaustion. The day when Mint gets the nod is closer than ever. Just my family tree data that needs a niche.

The camera bag has been sorted, yet again. My fault for wanting it all. If the need arises, I can handle low light, macros, long distance snaps and a bit of wide-angle madness – no, the one lens solution is not part of the plan. I’ve even packed some filters, in case I get artistic, and my IR filters might arrive if I hang around the house much longer (Hong Kong delay).
