Things gleaned from memory are interpretive. I don’t want to
say “selective”, but that’s the way of the beast. Probably explains why we
developed written records, as a society, and also why the skill of storytelling
was so valued by those who came before. I mean, most of us can handle the
salient things: the names of our siblings, and the right way to address our own
pets. Beyond that, a wilderness.

I arrived at the window, after the fact. Still, no doubt
about any of the details. A young fox was just at the edge of the doorstep,
with two kills: a mouse and a squirrel. In her jaws.

Another trivial evening, with a small team; we tied for
third, which is about as good as can be hoped for. The teams are getting
stronger, over time, and the questions fall outside my range of knowledge. Am I
getting too old for the game? I’d love to bring in some Trivial Pursuit cards
and see how well the kids would do with stuff that is, I admit, from before
their time.

The forecast people called this one correctly. It was,
indeed, a snow day. Schools and other offices left the lights off and the door
locked; I know of one because when I called my eye guy to arrange for a post-op
checkup, the answering machine recorded my request. They’ll listen to things
tomorrow. No emergency to avert.

Seems like an inauspicious start to the new year; raisin
toast, milk and coffee, a blizzard. I didn’t have to do anything except sit at
my usual place near the dining room window and watch the world go by. Of

see. The toast was good, though.

I believe that the Almanac has ruined generations of “people waiting for the weather to happen”. Hard to calculate their number, but too many among us believe that we can predict the turn of the winter ahead. Not so.I’m waiting on the predictions for the next 36 hours, as I try to calculate the fear factor of a long trip by car. Right now, the precipitation is going to be somewhere between 5 cm of rain and 50 cm of snow. More exact than that and you go crazy.

All of you with proper cooking knowledge: please hide your eyes and turn away. I have to confess that my experience with noodle based dishes comes down to boiling sticks of spaghetti in a big pot until soggy, or reheating steamed noodles in a boiling water until soggy. Yes, there’s a commonality here. Oh, and then there’s ramen.

We were lucky. Up in the other end of the province, the snowfall was real. Here: enough to record your progress, if you went walking. For my part, I settled for a quick pass with the shovel. Don’t want stuff freezing on the steps, this early in the stretch.

To the people who announce the weather events: today was a case of “failure to deliver”. Something about a snow storm? The schools and government offices closed early, in preparation. And then… nada.
