Our local nature show
I arrived at the window, after the fact. Still, no doubt about any of the details. A young fox was just at the edge of the doorstep, with two kills: a mouse and a squirrel. In her jaws.
I’d seen the squirrel, only minutes before, feasting on bird seed but acting “nervously”. Now, I know why. The speedy carnivore profiting from opportunity and distraction. A subtle reminder that there’s nothing meek about getting your meals, in a world without kitchens or restaurants.
It may have helped that we’re in a heavy rain and high wind period, with peak gusts just under 80 kph. Elsewhere, snow; here, the end of our white world. We had flurries in mid afternoon, the fat and slow moving ones that serve as “spring fertilizer” according to a local farmer. Then, the rain and the moment of high drama just outside my window.
Did you ever assemble something from a kit, and end up with missing parts? Inconvenient. How about a kit with listed parts that simply didn’t exist? And the kit is to construct a huge stage, and it falls down and kills someone. Details coming out of an inquest in Toronto, about that Radiohead concert that went wrong serve to remind us that you can’t assume anything.
If you are among those that have really large swimming pools, and you’ve been keeping captive dolphins around, watch out. The law is about to get rid of that loophole. No reason to panic about the inflated plastic ones, apparently. But if it eats fish and talks in a clicky voice, start considering your future plans.
