In lieu of safe storage

posted in food, history |

To the people who announce the weather events: today was a case of “failure to deliver”.  Something about a snow storm? The schools and government offices closed early, in preparation. And then… nada.

Moving right along. We have images of how the military feeds the forces, usually showing off some hairy cook slinging the hash onto trays. That might be true (I don’t know, firsthand). But, there is another product of the efforts to fuel a company. Something known in the trade as MRE (meal, ready to eat). Again, I have no direct experience, but one channel on YouTube exists to educate me. Someone who gets a thrill out of unwrapping and eating stuff from the front. No best before date here.

Before we continue, note that in this house, the best before date takes precedence over anything else. Even a hint of maturity, and out it goes. So, watching someone “chow down” on rations, from the last century (and in some cases, the century before that) is foreign. Might be dangerous; I’ll never know. I will stay with the visuals. Crackers that crack. Meat spread that spreads. Desserts that desert… if the apocalypse is ever a thing, the owner of this channel will survive. I guess that’s the price to pay for a cast iron stomach.

He even provides links to companies that sell such things. Ten meals for $120 US. Hardly more than a week in fast food, and they’re also reputed to last a long time. Again, I don’t know, and never will.
