Out to eat

Imagine that; today, driven by the novelty of having visitors, I actually went “out” for lunch. Into town, to a local café where I sat out and had a meal. Traditional fare, really. OK, a grilled cheese sandwich with bacon. But it was good, and it was novel. With the drop in temperature, the dog was able to stay in the car without the animal welfare police raiding, and I was able to pretend that I had a normal life.

Colour shift on the stove top

Outside, the kids are preparing for a campfire. Thankfully, on the same spot as last year, because I don’t want to have a crater field. Funny how we don’t seem to do stuff like this except during the season of high visits. Similarly, our largest pot (much bigger than I remembered) was brought our from the back of the cupboards, and a certain number of live crustaceans did their colour shift before serving as supper. Not my supper: son #2 and I had the run of the BBQ, and steaks are just as good as anything else.

Something requiring respite

I love my BBQ. Compared to all the other BBQs I’ve ever known, this one is the best.  No hot spots, but lots of heat. A grill that even I can keep clean, now that we’ve abolished the wire brush and opted for a wooden shovel (that’s the shape, not the purpose). A scale that warns me of imminent fuel shortage. Large enough that I can cook what is required in one go; we even managed leftovers. A marvel of technology, and at a price that was barely more than all the failures I’ve dragged home from the discount hardware stores. Oh, you want the brand? Weber. Not a secret.

Postponed my cone

I don’t mind home cooking, whether cooked by someone else, or cooked by me. Generally, I manage to clear my plate without canine assistance, and those frequent visits to the grocery store are for a purpose. Still, I have a secondary role; support to the local economy. Yes, we eat out, from time to time, and my intention is to continue for as long as I am able (there; the local restaurateurs can sleep soundly).

The informal banquet

Summer is more than a season here. It’s an actual state of mind. With only a hint of the shift, our seasonal neighbour from down the hill stopped in for the afternoon, along with her two yellow Labs, who own the room they’re in. Our dog will get over his bewilderment, but it will take time. When someone can arrive and you have little sense of how long has passed since the last visit, it means they’ve moved from acquaintance to friend.

Abstain from harvesting

Still no cold air in my living room. Come on, HVAC man, do your thing before I can simply open a door and profit from global cooling. The wait is good, in the sense that we aren’t spending money on fuel and campgrounds, but I would like to have the messy work out of the way before the next round of visitors.

Dining in a diner

Once again, I forget to start the GPS recorder before setting out. Guess my trip map will have some unexplained empty segments. Oh well.

Akin to a candy store

We didn’t hesitate, this morning. Certain campgrounds are equipped with negative karma; this one had a whole booklet to list their rules. I didn’t infringe on their desire to have social control. Come morning, after a coffee, we pulled our plug and got set for the great metropolitan avoidance.

House coffee wins

At home, I am able to pour a cup of good coffee, whenever. However, when out in a restaurant, such a privilege is not apparent. We went for breakfast, just as in other years, and we drank the house coffee. Not much to say, other than that the colour and temperature were correct. The flavor… nope. I guess it keeps me from sitting there for an extended period.

Not exactly burglary

I despair for the world, when a case of fraud involves a “Hamburglar”. One of those chain restaurants that has grown too big to fail, has an app. You can order your meal, and put it on credit, and then stop by and collect the bag of “so bad for your health, it’s good”. Business. However, in one man’s case, someone acquired his user name and password, and then used the app to feed the hungry. A miracle, by any other name.
