Food delivery

For many years, I treated lunch lightly. There was a window of opportunity; I could have become a regular on the restaurant circuit near the office, buy my priorities were different. All water under the bridge, as they say. Yesterday, among our finds at the treasure sale, we added two tiffin-carriers to our basket, without understanding the significance.

Turned over the symbolic stirring rod to another

Over the years, I’ve made a fair number of pots of chili. Large pots; approaching industrial volumes (which didn’t make much sense, given that my kids were averse to beans in their bowls). Still, I persisted. Opened a lot of cans along the way, because in the city, that’s where you got your veggies.

And for that I give thanks

The supper is over, the dishes are done; for that and so much more I give thanks.

This is a holiday weekend, up here in Canada. The last moment of repose, for many, before the theatrics of December. I could have gone all “involved” and did the outdoors up for winter. Raked leaves, except that with conifers that isn’t an issue. We now have a new oak sapling to fit into a hole (not yet dug). In future, should the little thing prosper, there will be leaves… I didn’t panic; the temperature is still up in the high teens; tee shirt and barefoot weather. Maybe next week, or the week after, the seasonal inspiration will kick in. For today, just me with my roast beef.

Needs more than a butter knife

Might not be the same as I’d do in my own kitchen, but good nonetheless. We were out to a community supper, with lots of local vegetables and a large serving of roast beef and gravy. Health food. The only downside is that the average butter knife doesn’t “do” a great job of cutting anything other than bread and butter. I may have appeared rushed to bystanders, but food served from a kitchen hotline doesn’t stay hot very long if you’re busy trying to make bite-sized pieces on the run.

Stick to steak

Not sure what to make of things. For the last couple of nights, I’ve been stressed about the wording of a document. Turns out, nobody else cared, in the long run. Things seem to work out, despite my “behind the scenes” discomfort. Whereas the young me might have taken the easy road, the older me looks for rough walking when I don’t need to. Is this a penance clause in my life?

We did explore the wye

What my last coffee wasn’t and my next coffee won’t be: “a caramel pumpkin spice latté”. Some things are just wrong!

Faced with two choices, take the third one

Sunday. The end of the grocery cycle. Faced with two choices for supper (thawed chicken whatevers from the freezer, or that can of meatballs and gravy that is kept around in case of emergencies), I opted for the third choice. Elsewhere.

When every basement is wet

Around here, we eat meals. Pretty much every day. Most are eaten because we’re hungry, but the occasional one also serves to mark an occasion. Celebrating birthdays is a good example. This evening, we put some time and effort into things and drove all the way to the city. The curry was worth the trip.

Overflow for a quiche experiment

A strange way to mix home and church: treating me as the overflow for a quiche experiment. There’s a breakfast in the parish hall tomorrow morning (I won’t be there). The two and a bit more pans of egg delicacy are done, and I’ve finished a small one all by myself. Doing my part, etc.

Slowing the vacation express

In parallel with my life, my desktop has changed to “Windows 7 Basic”. I don’t know why; I’m not bothered enough to spend precious Google time finding out how to reset things back. It’s been a long day, and my priorities lie elsewhere.
