Tonight’s debate serves as one great reason for a change in our electoral system. By some strange quirk of fate, the politician who would best serve as a prime minister is the person least likely to have that opportunity. A sad conclusion to draw at a time when I’m supposed to make a decision.

One bad session before the cameras does not a campaign make (or break), but this was not a red-letter day for the leader of the blue team. I arrived too late for the debate this evening, due to work committments, but when son #2 meets me on the street to say how badly things are going, the show has made an impression; my children are no longer apolitical.

This is one of those “nothing on” evenings. Just like a TV, where there’s a myriad of channels with nothing on, I’m in a grey funk. Nothing on. Tomorrow I’m travelling and this evening there’s a ton of laundry (figuratively), but the machine can only process so many pieces per load. Fill it full, and things just sit there, soggy and soapy. Moderation is needed.

It’s just a thought, but if the transit systems of our world want to cajole some of those automobile automatons onto the bus, there are a few things that will have to be done better. Today was “Leave Your Car At Home” day in many cities, including this one. Based on what i saw this afternoon, it wasn’t a big success.

I should know better. After all, the largest part of my waking hours are spent in front of a web browser, for better or worse. I see how quickly information moves through those little tubes, and how nothing stays off the radar for very long. But, as we get older we assume that nobody is listening.

Are we frightened, yet? If you are following the campaign which is now in Day Five and a bit, you should be. After all, you’ve been warned. A vote for the underdog is going to put Canadian Unity in danger. Stevie said so, and he’d never lie. He told me that, too.

You heard it here, first. When they turn on the Large Hadron Collider in a few hours time, it is going to make absolutely no difference. I will still have to get up tomorrow morning, put the dog out (and in) and go to work. The bus will still be a few minutes late. You can relax.

Here in North America, we eat our politicians raw, with a bit of sauce on the side. Doesn’t matter what level of government, or what the stripe, we know far too much about them before, during and after the electoral process. Pity it doesn’t stop my neighbours from electing idiots to powerful positions, but that’s for another time.

Sometimes I should just ignore the ringing telephone, since it’s rarely for me. Even when the caller asks for me by name. A few minutes ago, a long distance caller (call display tells half the story, usually) wanted to know if I would vote for a certain Harper. What, did they call an election on the weekend while everyone was distracted by the Olympics?

My contact with Dell support today left me bewildered. Here is a company that understands the online model of sales. Great techniques to convince a potential buyer that their model really does exist. Fast, free shipping. Quality product. And then, the bump in the road.
