What if there is a greener way?

posted in environment, politics |

Are we frightened, yet? If you are following the campaign which is now in Day Five and a bit, you should be. After all, you’ve been warned. A vote for the underdog is going to put Canadian Unity in danger. Stevie said so, and he’d never lie. He told me that, too.

Here we are, with two alternatives. Either we keep on doing the same old thing, which means that we do nothing and the oil industry continues to rape record profits (that’s not a typo), or we decide to change things around, and start making those who abuse the climate pay for their “God given right”. Now, we’ve been warned (by Stevie) that the economy will fail catastrophically, and that the flags will be torn asunder as the people revolt. His message is clear, just like the air we breathe and the water we drink.

Funny thing is that we have some neighbours to the south of us, about 36 million of them, living in the State of Euphoria known as California. And they’ve got this old carbon tax thing in place, and oddly enough things are doing just fine. 36 million people – isn’t that about the same number as all of us up here around the old maple tree (the one suffering from acid rain).

And across the pond, a number of member states in the European Union (one of the other great world economic circles) have decided that carbon taxes actually do have a benefit. Not to point fingers, or name names, but the gang of “greener than Stevie followers” include Sweden, Norway, The Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Austria, Germany and Italy. Go figure. Seriously. They have, and the great Hummer ride we’ve been on might not be the best way to travel.

Time to see just what the underdog is trying to say, underneath that “second language learner” veneer.
