Another day in the neighbourhood

posted in environment, politics |

You heard it here, first. When they turn on the Large Hadron Collider in a few hours time, it is going to make absolutely no difference. I will still have to get up tomorrow morning, put the dog out (and in) and go to work. The bus will still be a few minutes late. You can relax.

On to real life. The federal election campaign (Day Three, unless you started the clock early, like the Bloc, who wanted first dibs on the utility poles around the province) had a puffin divebomber, the launch of Scandalpedia and no break in the standoff that sees Liz May not even a Maybe for the upcoming debates. The price of gas has not followed the price of crude oil downward, proving that profits trump everything else in that industry. I’m now expecting; my antenna has been ordered, but will take up to six weeks to arrive. I declined the extended warranty, since it excluded corrosion, wind damage, lightning strikes, malicious damage and theft. In the world of twenty-six foot high aluminum poles, what else could go wrong? The dealer agreed.

Speaking of that antenna (I’m going to, regardless), my back yard is shallow. Only a few inches of topsoil and then the rock layer is reached. I’m going to have to learn to mix concrete. My son reassures me that it really isn’t all that difficult, requiring a couple of bags of ready-mix, a hole, some water and some labour. I remind him that his name is Labour. We’ll have to find a suitable piece of galvanized steel pipe to set into the hole; I have to stop eyeing the fence around the local soccer pitch as a possible source of raw materials.

The hurricane season has another one heading into the Gulf of Mexico. That makes nine named events, and the season is only started. Maybe we’ll get a day off work for windy water, just like the people to the south of here. I don’t want anything too serious, but if it must storm I am mentally ready to surveil things from my living room. After I unplug the air deodorizer – they apparently have a few nasty  side effects that the chemical companies were wont to mention.
