Crowd control by tap control

And now we wait. Will the new face of law and order prevail, or will the traditional face of the holiday persist? A heady show, to watch from a distance.

Observing the play-by-play of the political game

Either it’s the hockey angle, or approaching summer vacation, but our local politicians are plumb loco right now.

To the victors go the spoils

Victori spolia. Centuries pass, but things remain the same. In war, as in politics.

Today, we received the list of cabinet appointments. People who will actually have to work for their monies, unlike certain backbenchers (names withheld because bygones are bygones). But along with the worker bees come the drones. Today, the Harper Government appointed several new senators to the house of sober second thought.

The new kid on the block

The new kid on the block went to tour the neighbourhood today, and the neighbours were content. No more ridicule from one end of the country to the other about having elected “a pig in a poke”. Not all of the spectators were satisfied, though. In particular, the man that was responsible for the Bloc (no K needed).

We’re almost out of time for making the strategic choice

And then there were none. No more days of campaign rhetoric. Or fear mongering. Tomorrow, the rest of you will either vote or abstain. I’ve already gone, so I’ll be a spectator; not until after the magical hour of 22h00. That’s in deference to the people that might not get to decide anything, but hate being reminded of it.

Tax returns as spectator sport

For years, the family looked at me oddly before piling into the car for a day trip. T-Day, and the T stood not for travel but rather taxes. More particularly, tax return production, wherein I covered the kitchen table with piles of paper, renewed my calculator keyboard skills and then tried to keep my blood pressure below the point where an aneurism occurred.

Marking the ballot, early

Today, my “cup ranneth over”. After a month of political mudslinging, I headed over to the advance poll and did my part for democracy. Yes, I’m an early decider (I also abhor standing in line for anything other than free stuff). Despite what new detail might be added by the postulants for power in the next few days, I’ve marked the ballot and will live with the consequences.

Playing with numbers

Used to be, in Canadian politcs, that we had a predictable world. Two parties in constant opposition, a few smaller parties to provide (comic) relief and polls that were useful to the undecided voter. After all, if it wasn’t one of the big guys, it was the other. Easy to understand.

Airframes worth their weight in paper money

It has nothing to do with laziness. The reason why we shouldn’t change off the winter tires around here is that the season for new snowfall isn’t over yet. Sigh.

Easing my headache with a little bit of ECMA

I should take a couple of aspirin and go lie down, the better to resolve a headache brought on by the accumulation of four hours of political debate. Four hours of my life that I can never get back, might say a wiser man, but I did tune in for two consecutive evenings by choice. And oh, if I only had a choice. Clearly, things in Ottawa haven’t changed for the better, even in 2011. Pity. Maybe we need a different strategy, because what we’re doing right now isn’t working.
