Observing the play-by-play of the political game
Either it’s the hockey angle, or approaching summer vacation, but our local politicians are plumb loco right now.
When our chief municipal official in charge of bread and circuses decided that his arena was a “go”, he signed a deal with one of the leading business personalities in the province to “run” things. Simple verbs, compound object. How to spend the least money possible while maximizing profit. Business 101. Should have been a goal to remember, until someone else remembered that the risk was actually born by the taxpayer.
Fearing a day in court, the CMOICOBAC (see above) convinced a provincial politician to present a “private member’s bill” to remedy things. You know, smooth the road. Put the entente above the reach of those pesky courts. And it would have gone as hoped, until another politician decided that this deal might be too good to be true, and requested that the documents see the “light of day”.
Then, the provincial government decided that the whole issue might be better served by hiding the new law in the back pages of something called an omnibus. No need for unanimity. Majority rule for the majority and minority of taxpayers. Still with me? The opposition decided to protest this process by (let’s see if I can get this straight) watching some of their most beloved members quit caucus and slam the door on the way out. At which point the other party decided to wait until after summer vacation to play the next round.
There’s some magical date where the whole (original) business deal falls apart, and it is before the return of the government from vacation. And so the sun sets on another curious day in the “assembly”. I’m just an innocent bystander, wondering what’s next in this passion play.
