Do my children realize the one, salient difference between them and me? One word: history. I belong to an era they can never know. Let’s use a pair of acronyms: BW and AW.

Pardon the distraction. While I try to remember what set today apart from any other day, the TV is on. The program chosen, “The Crown”, is covering a period that I remember: when the Brits set off to save the shearing season on a far-off island close to the antipodes. Yes, I am that old, kids. Remember that any prior knowledge of the “war” comes from the press coverage I received. And with that, I realize that I know little to nothing about what really went on. I mean, I won’t be having an exam on the content, but just knowing that my history is woven from flimsy yarn is enough to make me sad.

Today, the little car moved one step closer to its new vocation. After a quick piling of personal effects into a handy food bag (the big, reusable kind) and leaving behind a pair of booster cables in the trunk, we headed down the road to a garage that knows how to properly clean a car. I could have tried to do the job at home, but my skills are shallow. Plus, we’re now into a cold and windy spell, and after fifteen minutes I threw in the (virtual) towel.

Please, don’t interrupt; the world is busily counting. Straws, ballots, stars in the sky. Right now, all we want is a chance to have those precious markers tallied. Else, all is for naught. The election, although technically over, isn’t. Yes, one person wants the whole thing to stop, before the rest of us have any assurance. With a tiny measure of justice, the dance will continue.

The first snowfall photos are coming in from across the nation; I guess we’ll have to accept that we won’t get a pass to compensate for a lost year in our lives. Don’t get me wrong; going out on snowshoes or skis is a good thing. It’s just the setting aside of several months more. I don’t even get storm days, any more.

Going over my mental “projects in progress”, and I realize I have a problem. Too much down time and not enough action on my part. Right now, in various piles, I have a new amateur radio station to set up, a mag-loop antenna to complete, some satellite stuff, a whole dessert table with various Raspberry Pi ideas; and that’s just one corner of the work area. Throw in my tiny solar generator, some musical gear, preparation for the big freeze…

For anyone following the presidential race in the US, tonight marks the first evening of debates. On social media, the enthusiasm is palpable. What will you be doing, this evening? “laundry”, “my hair”, “mowing the lawn”. Guess I can wait for the reactions on YouTube, later this week.

We do not own a grand domain. We are not the “masters of all we survey”. However, if you come along the road behind the house on a ATV, and then head down into the cottage area, WE WILL be watching you! Just wanted to get that out there. Even if the dog doesn’t bark, because he is otherwise distracted by the food on my plate.

School is open. Not everywhere, but across the nation, in small, childlike steps. And we now have to prepare for “the next wave”. You know, pandemically speaking. It’s still too early to call for a trend, so we’re going to have to accept anecdotal evidence. Often without a clear grasp of the population numbers.

A second computer has gone into nowhere land. Blame it on “Wonky Windows”. More than likely, the ingestion of some “pushed” update means that the machine boots, complains, reboots and we start all over again. Hardly a productive state. I’m tired of reading diagnostic hints; yes, switching to Linux might be worth some analysis, but right now getting data onto an external store is a priority.
