Completing another course

As I work through the final set of videos for my current MOOC, I’m forced to admit that I learned something today. Among all the bad efforts attached to playing the theremin, there are actually a small number of musicians that can coax a tune out of one. Here’s an example: Clara Rockmore. Despite her patronym, this is not an example of classic rock..,

And their interest quickly faded

On my todo list at work is setting up a pair of display units. Don’t need deteails; just take it that a display with HDMI is required. And, out of more than fifty monitors in the building, not one was suited to the task. Fixed that. Now we have a brand new large monitor, for the tech crew. Good.

Math and music mixes

A good afternoon for the Rouge et Or football team. Evenly matched with the Carabins, the game really “wasn’t over until it was over”. No chance of sleeping through this one, although the dog came very close. Potato chips were his version of strong coffee.

Musical trivia

When the highlight of the day is a short trip to gas the car and buy takeout, it’s a safe bet that your life won’t be the inspiration for a blockbuster movie. Not even one of those “straight to video” titles. Oh well.

Time to edit

Someone stopped by my cubicle this afternoon with a particular request. Could I locate a computer that went out for repairs, maybe? After some careful consideration, the simple answer is NO.

The punctuation of the gag reflex

Another day gone by. Already? Twenty-four hours doesn’t have the same staying power it once did.

On the way home, I happened to catch a conversation that lofted out from a small group of small children. Hard to avoid, actually. One youngster telling the others that “she” (I think it was a little sister) had said that “two and two equals three”. The tone; derisive. As in “how stupid is that?”. And from such basic elements, we build our society. Not only must the truth be taught, but the truth must be supported. Certain political parties would be pleased to know that conformism is alive and well.

Old habits die slowly

An uncomfortable calm covered the ladn, as the workers laid down their hammers and shovels and unidentified but expensiv battery powered tools. The union had warned us. Either the deal gets sweeter, or the job will have to wait. The mayor, falling into his common role of accountant with an ax to grind, kept repeating the mantra: “Two hundred thousand a day. One million a week”, before tearing up and turning away from the assembled journalists. Tune in tomorrow for the next chapter in our latest serial.

Granular education

While watching a band play the Theme From Shaft, on PBS, it all became clear! I’ve finally reached the age where I can imagine myself doing almost anything. Within reason.

LIfe’s sticky note

Almost a week since the big closing. You remember; I mentioned this several times over the last while. No? It doesn’t matter. I wasn’t there for the show, but I have enjoyed every minute, vicariously. Maybe not the basketball game (that never actually took place), but the rest. No fries from the cafeteria, what with the change to a healthier lifestyle, but there was cake.

Institutional demise

Today I’ve depended on an impromptu news service to keep up on important happenings. My sister. At the closing ceremonies for my old high school. I couldn’t be there, so I did the next best thing. Lots of fun, and some familiar faces (based on the posted pictures). The amazing secretary from the front office that knew everybody (not bad, in a school of better than twelve hundred evolving faces), was on hand. Ninety-five (her age, not her exam mark on facial recognition skills). Take that, those that want to identify the great masses of the world!
