Musical trivia

posted in education |

When the highlight of the day is a short trip to gas the car and buy takeout, it’s a safe bet that your life won’t be the inspiration for a blockbuster movie. Not even one of those “straight to video” titles. Oh well.

I’m listening to Vinyl Tap, thanks to CBC and my little music player. I don’t always tune in, but I’ve never regretted the effort. So much stuff to learn. Trivial content, but fun. I tried to see if I could come up with a history of the program; so far, not clear. Randy has a lifetime to share, and the will. Winning combination. For those of us that “grew up” listening to the local radio station in the evening, this brings back good memories. Music, when it was fun and had a beat, and you could dance to it. My kids are going to miss out on that, I fear.

Learned some other musical trivia this afternoon. A two-bell euphonium only plays through one bell at a time. I did not know that. I had never considered  the question. Wiki cleared that up, and I also learned that I don’t have enough money to collect one for my instrument library.

This afternoon’s online course work involved a review of MIDI concepts. Stuff that I used to teach to others, half a lifetime ago. Now I’m ready to start applying my skills, and the information has new importance. Continuing education. If I start wanting to learn calculus, slap me silly. No need to return to those murky waters.
