Math and music mixes

posted in education |

A good afternoon for the Rouge et Or football team. Evenly matched with the Carabins, the game really “wasn’t over until it was over”. No chance of sleeping through this one, although the dog came very close. Potato chips were his version of strong coffee.

I’ve had a very full weekend of coursework, and will not finish this particular effort with anything close to perfection. The focus has shifted from music to math, and my brain just doesn’t calculate the result of a progressive loop. Probably something very simple; probably better left to the compoter. All of the videos proved that random sound is much closer to noise than music. I tried. I really tried. I’m going to stay with what I know. Even my assignments (open book, apparently, with feedback) were an exercise in approximation. Not a proud academic moment. Still one week and one project to go.

The family is homeward bound, and I’m getting periodic updates. Not as scientific as a GPS trace, but I’ll make sure the lights are turned on before they arrive.

And now for some real science. The Mars Rover has been roaming around on Mars, and can’t find the methane that the research team believed to be available. Goes against their careful predictions, based on looking through a telescope (methane is a colourless gas, right?) All it really proves is that the cow did not originate on Mars, nor are there any venting boreholes. No fracking there… yet. So much of astronomy is based on evidence that isn’t anything more than guessing.
