I suspect the little kid. The one I haven’t seen. After several years away from contact with the “germ pool”, we’re right back in the puddle, and today I woke up with that telltale sign of being puddled. My nose; in full drip mode. Now, recent research confirms that a “man cold” really is worse than others believe. I just know that I’ll be back to bed, really soon. And as for other advances in medical knowledge, we now are supposed to “feed a cold AND feed a fever”. At a minimum, attempt to replace the constant loss of fluids (see full drip).

What can you do, when the news is that there will be no more news, at least concerning your community? This afternoon, in one of those stories that leaves one feeling confused, a swap of newspapers in Upper Canada put an end to close to a century and a half of laying out the stories and putting it all to bed.

In a few hours, Black Friday will be officially over. This, for me, has been a day without commerce. If any others wonder how this can be accomplished, despite the intense pressure of the advertising and retail sectors, there are some simple tricks. Read the rest of this entry »

Loblaws has a new incentive program. Much like the old incentive program, except… this one will really cost you money. $99.99 a year, in order to get even more points when you buy your weekly veggies.

Observing weather is an exercise in mathematics. Sure, most of us know that “it” is colder or warmer than at a previous point in time. We also recognize when rain falls. How about if we use a graphic to make the correlation clearer. This is data from this afternoon, just outside my kitchen.

“But can you change a lightbulb?” Silly question, really; most people can. How about “Can you rebuild the infrastructure for a small country?” Sure, with enough people. However, the firm that has been contracted to repair Puerto Rico is, nominally, two people. Well-connected people, obviously. They’ve scored a $300 million jackpot, and no matter how badly they mess up threading those lightbulbs, the money will be in the bank.

The temperature peaked at 22.4C, this afternoon. I’m under an obligation to note such things. As well, there are tomatoes growing on the vines in the garden bed, and I have more than my share of houseflies, clustered on the ceiling. That’s another story, without a proper ending (yet). My swatter can only get a few, each time, before the others swarm indecisively.

Another batch of old pictures, on the web today. This set goes back to the time of my great-grandparents, so a full century ago. The local parish church, which no person alive in the area has ever seen. It tickles my fancy; particularly because the one photo is in focus and properly exposed. Score a point for a long-gone photographer.

Against all odds, I ended up watching a press conference with the premier of Quebec. Actually “tuned in” early enough to watch the janitor help out with the sound check, and the focus check completed with someone’s notebook. Locally produced content. The bilingual statement (that’s both languages at the same time) served to remind me how much my ability to “split-brain” has grown in the last few decades. Anyhow.
