Reuse our refuse

The onset of the Olympics reminds me that the world is a big place. That fourteen-hour offset in coverage times, for example. Meanwhile, my own world has shrunk; I now spend almost all of my days and nights in the front half of a two acre estate.

Novel approach to parking a car

Based on a news story from CBC, this evening, I believe I have been “not profiled”. The minds at CSIS have determined that someone who cleans up around their house, pays down their debts and adapts a more healthy physical regime might actually be a sleeper terrorist. For the record (other than sleepy), I fit none of the above characteristics.

Great performances (not)

Congratulations to all of you who sat through the great Teleprompter Performance, last evening. I didn’t, but the press brought me the highlights this morning, in keeping with fine theater. The fact checkers have done due diligence, and the fictional core was up to par. Now, looking forward; can this be the last performance by this reality TV host? Please?

Tracing the site lines

Overnight, we received the first true taste of winter weather. The schools were delayed by an hour, but our lane was blown clean by daylight. Outside, a true “snowshoe paradise”, if anyone wondered. I had to get the shovel and remove a solid 30 cm from the deck; an excuse for exercise, and a bet against anything else coming down, wet or otherwise. The weight. Always about the weight.

Part of the parental checklist

My job as a parent isn’t done yet. Not only do I have a long-term agreement to pamper the family dog, but I have to take care of the seasonal stuff. Just today, after reading weather forecasts from across the sphere of activity, I decided to send out personalized warnings about an impending snow storm; above all, to dress warmly and stock up on potato chips. MY parents never did that for me, but maybe I was better trained about the risks inherent in getting “storm-stayed”. As well, I had to check the car (here) to see if there were lights on inside. Now, that’s not exactly a tick on the parental checklist, but if any of the kids were living here I’d feel an obligation to verify the status of any car they drove. Part of the total care package.

Out for a drive

Here, it’s winter time. When looking out the window isn’t enough. Today, I decided to go for a drive. During a storm.

With all the comforts of home

You want to know what is better than spending the day in your car? Getting to your destination!

I’m home, after a fortnight away. Happily. I don’t have that lust to voyage that so many brag about. Perhaps it’s genetic. Anyhow, when the car pulled up in our driveway, and I went inside with the first load of luggage, I was a “happy camper”; no tent involved. We stayed in three different provinces, tasted food and cold temperatures in five. Managed to get where we wanted to be without major incidents of “lost in the woods”. Kept the feet dry.

In the absence of anything

Still too cold for anything fun, says me. The ice wind has been present for the whole of this trip. Now stretching into two weeks, or a whole new year if you prefer. I miss my infloor heating.

Here for the meal

Yesterday we partied. Today we eat (ate). Headed back to the big house around noon, and spent the afternoon preparing supper for a possible thirty faces. Haven’t seen the official count, but that sounds about right.

No congestion

The last day before the Big Holiday. Had to get out and do some last minute shopping (to be fair, the ONLY shopping on my list). To my surprise, no congestion. Anywheres. In, around, out; all on my list found and purchased. Where is the stress in that?
