I love how surfing the web takes me to places I would/will never visit otherwise. This afternoon, I came across an article that discussed how certain historians try to match legend to real places. Things like “springs that throw up bones”, as an example. Now, the images are not fulfilling; I’d be better off getting my gumboots out and wandering around in the bogs, but I like the idea that there are others out there following the steps in the stories.

One of the kids sent me a rather interesting aerial view, of the falls near where we used to live.

This morning, with the low rumble of a tractor outside, I had to check what might be going on. After all, farmers don’t work every day. Going by the house, on the side lane, that tractor. In tow, a full-sized tree. Not a log; the whole tree, right down to autumn leaves on the branches. A large tree, had to be at least 10 meters in height (now length). No idea why. No idea what you do with such a thing, in your own back yard. I’m glad I had a chance to see it, though.

Last night, I could have joined the nation and watched the televised political debate. I didn’t. Actually, I think I was part of the majority. Did what was second best: listened to the after-debate review, on CBC. As they say, I “dodged a bullet”. Poor format, too many voices, a mess of “stingers” and scripted talking points all led to the conclusion that there was no winner. So much for clarifying muddy waters.

The shoulder season, wherein camping becomes a feat. We plan (still plan) to head for the Really Much Larger city tomorrow. The vehicle is loaded, and our route is familiar. What gums up things is that our traditional parking place might not be available. Go on… In reality, the Canadian version of a shoulder season is more like a precipice.

Our time on the road, last spring, gave me a whole new set of experiences to draw from. That’s why, re-watching the movie The Leisure Seeker, I had so much better an understanding of some of the situations the couple found themselves in. Not the exact situations; more of a sense about what life on the road is like. I enjoyed the movie more, this second time through.

My bad. Not being attentive to the calendar means that we get to “keep” our garbage for another two weeks. The bin is half (full or empty), so no impending overflow, but mixing Wednesday with Thursday does matter. I’ve wheeled the monster back in from the curb, so few of the neighbours will even notice… unlike the summer folk that put their out much earlier than scheduled, and leave them out to the point where even raccoons despair.

Another power bump. Apart from the nuisance of resetting clocks, this serves to remind me that our grid is a carefully balanced affair. When a tree falls in the forest, I don’t have to hear it; the restart of a dozen electrical devices gives me all the notice I need. I do hope that we get power back (across the whole province) before much longer, but the wind forecast came with a warning: more trees will come down, and more repairs will be required.

Going forward, it will be about the trees. The hurricane wasn’t gentle, and across the province, the landscape has something new. Gaps. The chainsaw is the tool of this week.

Forget schedules. This is summer, and when the call came in that our next round of visitors would arrive a full day early, meaning today, it simply meant starting my preps a little earlier. All is done, the family is here, and this will be the fifth “tiny” of our summer. All involved are related to us, as a couple, by blood or not.
