Keeping track of the day

Moving through Saturday, with little of note. Our forecast snow show hasn’t started, but to be fair the forecast did mention midnight. In the same way that I have to check the day of the week by looking at my computer clock, the idea of midnight is done by deduction. Yes, time blurs, when you are home for weeks on end.

Stay inside. All you need to know.

Yep, this is turning out to be a year for the history books. In our area, at least. Our main restaurant burned down, a couple of days ago. The fire actually required two days to “get ‘er done” as they say locally. We’ve got another snow storm warning on the weather channel, and at the moment we are staying away from the windows.  Not a weather thing; the police have asked people to stay inside, with their doors firmly latched, as they deal with an active shooter. At least, we think that’s what going on. News is hard to come by when the local station has one hour of airtime per day, and the rest of the feed comes from upper Canada. There’s always Twitter, right?

Returning to expanded spaces

CSNY got it right, ages ago, with their song “Almost Cut My Hair”. Now, this doesn’t apply to me, because I don’t get that urge, but my neighbour up the way has posted his adventures with scissors. Not just him, the kids too. I wonder why. I mean, it’s not warm outside, yet. Seems like a few weeks of added plumage would be harmless.  I never did anything like that (with my kids). They did it to themselves, on several occasions. Memorable results. I am glad that they all seem to have outgrown the urge to let the fibres fall.

Local changes

A change in routine! The dog and I were tasked with recovering a rascal (rogue, actually) from the local garage. And, a few things have changed since my last stroll outside.

Beyond my castle walls? Why?

Another afternoon in the house. Which, just before supper, brought the probing question: Was I suffering from agoraphobia?

Awaiting the Starlink train

Even a false alarm can be “alarming”; this afternoon the alert system notified the whole interprovincial region that there might be a live shooter in the Halifax area. No chances taken; things halted. Stores and public spaces were locked. And then, we waited. Several hours later, the all-clear. We will probably never know what set off the response, although someone did mention that there was some blasting in a quarry (work related). Again, no chances taken. And I guess that’s how it should be.

Isolation and overthinking

And with the receipt of one short message, this whole pandemic just became real. An elderly relative, living in a long-term care facility in Toronto, has tested positive for COVID-19 with symptoms. I don’t know how this will play out, given age and general health.

Remember how good summer vacation used to feel?

I had started to take my access to foreign markets as a given. Until today. I had emailed a small (very small) company in California, to check on the shipping costs for a small antenna. The owner responded within minutes that he couldn’t sell to me, without procuring an export permit. I was tempted to see if he would try the subterfuge of simply sending me what  I wanted, as a gift; in return, I would send him a specific amount of money, as a gift. Somehow, I sensed that he took government regulations seriously.

Remaining on task

Where do the hours go? Here we are, almost nightfall. I did get up, early. Had a wonderful sunrise plan, which was thwarted by cloud cover. Maybe another day. And, yes, I did go back to bed; that’s just common sense. Anyhow, by the time I put things back on the rails, we were already up to noon.

Are they among us?

Here’s today’s “little known fact”, for those of you that wondered: if the sun is supposed to rise at a given time, it will. Your decision to travel for ten minutes when you only have five available means that you will not make it on time. Next.
