When the ads outweigh the content stream

I get it. The internet would disappear if it wasn’t for those targeted ads. However, not everything I type is a lead to a sale. Yesterday, I asked a sibling and a friend about a particular “essential oil worn by hippies”. Today, Amazon hit me up to buy some. Now, that was fast! I still don’t know what the stuff smells like. For the record, I won’t be acquiring a vial to satisfy my curious nature. It would be more fun to wander through a flower power party.

Hide your kid-lit

The library corner devoted to Dr. Seuss is special. For many children in America, his simple rhymes serve as a foundation in the pile of books that every child is likely to read. Now, keep in mind that Mr. Geisel died almost thrty years ago. His many books have content that might not haved aged well. The estate has decided to delist almost ten percent of his published work. If you have hardcover volumes in your personal library, hide them well.

Postcards as a national distraction

Lock the doors! Shutter the windows! If not, the authorities will take care of things for you. Today, another public health teleconference, with increased restrictions. To protect us, because there are among us those too stunned to do so on a personal basis.

Directed task completion

Blame it on the education system. I work best when I can visualize a deadline, and realize that the penalty for being late is more onerous than the work involved. I’ll go “out on a limb” here, and postulate that this is an intentional control setting for society. We hang the carrot in front of the donkey, knowing full well that if he actually has to eat that tasteless vegetable, he might not be so willing to accept the task at hand.

Mysterious invisible waves as a defence

Another of the many “but how will I know if it works” moments; I have just plugged in a pair of technically magical devices, in the RV. Supposed to emit sound waves that I can’t hear, but that the beasts of the fields (OK, mice) will flee.

My circling son

Finally, we’ve received some photos (not displayed here) from son #2. He’s circling the Gaspé, in an opposite direction to that taken by me in an earlier life. I believe the weather to be similar, as he had a night of wet camping. Hey, me too! In a ditch, with a flow through stream. Why waste time seeking out an established campground when nature provides the basics (including running water)?

Dates don’t always match

In recording the comings and goings of people from past centuries, I have to make certain choices. Interpretive choices, for want of a better explanation. You see, on occasion, what one document has recorded does not match well with another. Think of it as colour descriptions.

Playing the name game

Give me a few minutes, until I figure out who you are. It’s a game, locally, and I’m late to the game. I have to sort out social identities based on trite remarks about siblings made by others. Locally, everyone else seems to know everyone else, and I get to see if I can match the pieces in the puzzle. Great mental exercise.

Back from a virtual drive

Just got back from a drive in another city. Not really; we’re still cut off from the real world, but there are virtual ways to see the world, without any need to put on shoes and leave the house. Google Street View, there to feed my endless curiosity.

A store to explore

The impended weather was really nothing at all; yes, school had a delay and no, it didn’t interfere with our life. Not a bit. By noontime, after reclearing the walk, we put the dog in his favourite travel position and headed for the city. Our list was short.
