Slowly unpacking

The final action of vacation: unpacking. I’ve decided to stretch the “pleasure” out over a couple of days. Just because.

Clam powered

It rained, but not enough to change the plan. By coffee time, the campsite had been restored in, on and (not) under the car. The dog was nested among the pillows, allowing slight rear visibility, and the grass under the tent looked VERY yellow.

Staking out our view

Today, we moved from the abstract to the real, with the help of a measure and some surplus stakes.

The contractor, which is easier to explain than “the guy who runs a house store” agreed to meet us on site this morning. Rain or shine (we had both, as it happened). I greeted him with the spiel “This is our field of dreams. When you build it, we will come”.

A not-so-instant transfer

Ever watched one of those Hollywood blockbusters, where the hero sits at the computer terminal, types in a few digits and whisks a fortune around the globe to a secret bank account? Based on our afternoon, it has little to do with reality. Moving money is much harder “in real life”.

Abusing the sacred bean

Unexpected but normal side effect of my morning sampling coffees: Spidey-sense.

My start was the usual camp stove affair. AeroPress and a longer brew time after allowing the dog to lead me up the road and back. Just the old ordinary start to a morning. Off to see what the Basin was like before the tourist
s roll in. Next, a stop at Timmy’s, out of boredom. Nothing felt. All the way down to St. Peter’s, where I overheard some nearby tourists praising the new coffee bar. Might as well take a peek.

Travel do-over

I could have used a “checklist for unfamiliar activities” this morning. Full of good intentions, I set out for the city. Had to add a “volte-face” when I realized that my wallet was in a different coat back at the campsite. No money. No papers. Not good. One hour round trip to resolve my oversight.

Split team

Half of my travel team is gone. Traveling, across the briny ocean to a far off shore. It took a concerted effort, a GPS, a spiral track to get back on course after leaving a rotary too early and a ferry boat, but the trip began on schedule.

Opposing camps

In life we are trained to “ask the experts”. What to do when the experts adopt opposing camps of opinion? My problem, succinctly. Big money decision with fuzzy information.

A sheep with an order

As someone who is (blissfully) unaware of the nuances of the colour wheel, the last few days have been “interesting”. Watching others search for complements to the yellow tones of birch in a slab of ersatz granite can be food for humorous thought, or an invitation to take the dog for another walk.

Downsize and profit

Rise early. Make coffee. Sit and look at the numbers. Sigh. Repeat, ad nauseum. Face it, a few hundred thousand dollars extra would be dandy.
