Staking out our view
Today, we moved from the abstract to the real, with the help of a measure and some surplus stakes.
The contractor, which is easier to explain than “the guy who runs a house store” agreed to meet us on site this morning. Rain or shine (we had both, as it happened). I greeted him with the spiel “This is our field of dreams. When you build it, we will come”.
The cover of scrub spruce will serve as nothing more than a nuisance when the bulldozer comes, in several weeks. Today, we made our way through with a long survey tape, some pointed stakes and a heavy hammer, and in minutes the four corners of the foundation were marked. At the same time, it was our first chance to see how the lawn will be much larger than what we now tend.
There was a laser level in play, as well, to get a feel for the grade of the site. As I have suspected for a long time… None. A flat field of play. With that determined, our first site meeting ended, and we parted company. For us, lunch in Souris. Crab salad sandwiches.
During the afternoon, I continued to research the topic of standby generators. What I don’t (yet) know would fill volumes, but that will change. Have to spend some (more) money. In return, our investment will be better protected against electrical outages, and I can try to enter my radio station in a different “class”, come next Field Day. A tiny detail to others, but it makes sense to me.
Last supper in Naufrage. The summer is over. On with real times.
