The day is over, and I have been well entertained. Today was “the day”, when son #3 and a host of other musicians gathered on the stage of the new Salle Raoul-Jobin, in the renovated Palais Montcalm theatre in Quebec City. A concert hall that still has the “new car” smell. And, from my point of view, excellent acoustics. I was there, and the concert was memorable.

Even though I didn’t have the spare change this week to attend the D5 conference down in San Diego, some nice people did point out some of the salient details from today, and I’m impressed by what the future holds for me. In fact, back about five years ago, when Minority Report was released, I thought that science fiction had a certain cool factor going for it. Now, I believe that certain objects may be closer than they appear. Forget the substance plot. Focus on the interface.

So what’s an offended politician to do? After all the ranting on the public stage, the accusations of calumny and worse, the assurance that the smoking gun would be found, what do you do with an official report that says nothing was found? It’s easy; you continue ranting, making accusations of calumny and worse, assuring anyone that is still listening that the smoking gun is, well, still out there. At least, that’s one way of keeping a small percentage of your faithful close to you.

The polls on the Island closed about three hours ago, and I’ve been an indulgent media junkie ever since. Two, sometimes three web browser windows open, the TV tuned first to Newsworld and then to the streamed feed out of Charlottetown, even a quick look at the Guardian and the definitive PEI blogroll, just to make sure of the details. The people have spoken, and the tide has changed. A new government for the Island, for the next four years and a bit.

This evening, the humour community of (the province of) Quebec is holding its award program on TV, and frankly I feel like someone on the outside looking in. Admitting that I am not apt to “go to a show” or watch anything but Juste Pour Rire reruns doesn’t give me much background for such a program, but I don’t know who half these performers are. I could as well be watching something via satellite from another country.

Man can’t fly worth beans. I’m not talking about getting into one of those new-fangled flying machines here. Rather, about how we can get all two feet 6o.96 cm (two feet) off the ground, but then our good friend gravity kicks back in. Free fall, maybe; free landing, rarely.

Sometimes we wish too fervently for the return of warm weather. With all the great memories we build, involving youth and beaches and sun, we forget that our brains are not wired correctly for such things. As proof, I offer up our local politicians.

Starting with yesterday, I performed a necessary software upgrade on three different blogs. I’d held off, due to some issues with my custom template code, but after several weeks of low key testing and the arrival of a newer, more stable version, the time had come. I transferred files via FTP, held my breath… and relaxed. All seems to be working as it should.

The shelf life of an idol is one year. Proven. After that, the stage spins one hundred and eighty degrees, and behind the curtain we see another idol. Don’t worry about false idols, because they’re all real. It’s just that the best before date creeps up and then, politely, you’re history.

The 400th Birthday Club is at it again.
Sometime in the next two hundred and twenty-odd days, a birthday cake will be loaded on a big truck (with at least two flat tires) and the cry will go out to light the candles. I fear there won’t be a lucifer to be found. No lights, no show. You see, the celebration for Quebec City’s Four Hundredth Anniversary (in capitals, if you please) just seems to hit one bump after another.
