So many choices to be made

posted in media |

Starting with yesterday, I performed a necessary software upgrade on three different blogs. I’d held off, due to some issues with my custom template code, but after several weeks of low key testing and the arrival of a newer, more stable version, the time had come. I transferred files via FTP, held my breath… and relaxed. All seems to be working as it should.

This seems like a good time to leave behind my catch-all categorization of the various posts. It is true: uncategorized is always correct, but hardly a path to clarity. So, I’m now in the process of recategorizing more than five hundred posts. Not as simple as it seems.

Remember, I wrote the stuff. I do know what I was trying to say. I do get to choose the broad categories. And therein stands the elephant in the middle of the room. Even if nobody else cares, I will be forced to reread with a critical eye and I will have to decide how I want to present each post to those who happen on by.

There is inspiration to be found on other blogs. How do they decide on their categories? Is there a guide to the uncategorized that I haven’t found yet. Time to google up an answer.

I’ve completed about 10% of the task. Fun, in an odd way. Wish I’d started about eighteen months ago, though. And as a rare afternote, upgrading is one more way of providing security to your blogsite. After all, software is a “work in progress”.

Well I’m a huge fan of categories. I know from my own blog statistics that many of my readers use them and I find them quite useful as well. I use them all the time to find past articles and I frequently backlink to previous posts as I am too lazy to cover the same ground twice.
