Based on a limited test, I now know that reserving a taxi the night before results in a polite, conversant, retired from his real life driver arriving on time. The same driver actually knew a direct route between here and there, and within minutes we were waiting for the train. Waiting for a long time, because we had been too conservative in the estimate of time required, but that’s a minor detail. Today, I am on the iron road. The way of the worry free.

The family is in crisis avoidance mode. What to do, this evening, given that the Oscars are on at exactly the same time as Republic of Doyle? There’s a PVR that I don’t know how to use, which will permit storing one of the two for timeshifted play. Shall we vote? Too early to call, but the Oscars will probably get the nod for the broadcast slot, given the time sensitive nature of their content. No fun to watch after reading the results in the local newspaper.

There is science, and there is science fiction. And when the two paths join, be very afraid. The news out of Chelyabinsk (for those unfamiliar with Russian geography, Google is your travel guide) shows a meteorite on a collision path with the area. It also shows that some things can’t be predicted, no matter how good the mathematics.

As a radio operator, the needs of the emergency measures community are important. Happily, I’ve not had too much involvement. No emergencies… Anyhow, the provincial government has decided to shelve one of their planning scenarios. No zombies. Not even pretend zombies. In the real world, the government believes that it’s not a realistic possibility. From where I sit (with too much access to bad movie content) I see things differently. That whole “night of the living dead” thing; it’s a risk.

I stayed the course. I pulled wires, by myself, and I checked for pilot lights on switches and in the end I restored network service to the weather station. All is good here. Now on to other emergencies.

Please don’t interpret this as criminal intent. Instead, imagine it as a really neat simulator thing, or a great widescreen movie idea. Somewhere in Sweden, the cleaning lady proved that pushing a broom isn’t enough. There has to be more. Why not take the train for a joyride? I can understand her need for speed. And this wasn’t the planned outcome of her escapade. Before I show you the picture, remember not to try this at home. Those involved were trained (sic) professionals, meaning “paid to do the job”. Not THIS job, but sometimes things happen…

Talk about goal directed. We skipped the free breakfast in the hotel lobby and went straight for go. Down the highway, into the rising sun. Only at this time of the year can you drive straight south with the sun in your eyes…

Outside, before dawn, in a snowstorm. The dog requires that the human get involved. Still have to check out those tracks across the way. Still make a path to the tree, just in case. I’m OK with all that.

What seemed like a good idea at “oh dark thirty” lost appeal through the night. We were awake, hours before the start of the annual Boxing Day sales. Why not just carry on until six in the morning, when the line would move. So close. Wiser heads prevailed, and there was a short period of shut eye before the box store safari.

Once the “guy in a swigh brought me stuff” meme passes, the whole Christmas holiday advances to a better level. For us, this is a family occasion. Forget that all the family can’t be here, and continue towards Go (you’ll need that $200 at the sales, tomorrow).
