A hard drive shuffle

posted in computing, travel |

What seemed like a good idea at “oh dark thirty” lost appeal through the night. We were awake, hours before the start of the annual Boxing Day sales. Why not just carry on until six in the morning, when the line would move. So close. Wiser heads prevailed, and there was a short period of shut eye before the box store safari.

Good thing. By six oh five there was no lineup, and inside the stocks of what I wanted were seemingly limitless. On the list, a new hard drive for a laptop. I considered my possibilities, considered the advice of others in the forums and paid my bill. Back to the motel for a brief siesta, before returning to the malls to buy some screwdrivers. Case cracking tools. I nneded to extract that new drive from the shiny plastic case.

We headed over to the transplant point after lunchtime, and I discovered that drives are not created equal, once the form factor has been respected. My new drive was too thick, so I bit the bullet and headed out to purchase another (more compatible) model. Did the necessary setup and then started the long slog to transfer data.

And here I am, hours later. USB is not fast, when it comes to transferring 150 GB of files. Add in the rights frustration between two versions of Windows and I wonder if I’ll be done before winter ends. Not such a big deal, but a job half done is a failure (in the world of hardware upgrades).

Meanwhile, the others are playing dominos…
