Where do I know you from?

Tonight, George (he who has a red chair) left me with an intellectual challenge. Try to see, and then remember, all the movies that have had Judy Greer in the cast. What with ninety-one credits on IMDB (and counting), this could be a toughie.

Mediocre movie producer

It seems we made less money last year. Or had less money left over at the end of last year. That makes sense. Factor in the inflation rate, and the increase in taxes at most levels (nickel and dime me to death), Add payments for a cellphone that wasn’t even on the radar at the beginning of the cycle, and we did not get into the 1% group, again. Some might count having a smart phone as a plus; I’m less sure.

I cannot see how it works

Some things are not meant to be understood. For example; magic. Not the stuff of myth and legend. The stuff of a pack of cards and an ability to trick the rest of us.

Bias in the broadcast

My timetable is out of sync with the broadcast world. The Olympic opening started while I was at work, but I never had any doubt that there would be retransmissions throughout the rest of the day. Here’s the catch. The American network (who hold the rights) are sending out their version of things. I can’t handle the bias. Not the sweaters, or the flags, or the vague patriotic references. I want to see things through apolitical eyes, and that is going to be more difficult that imagined. Maybe I’ll just imagine the ceremonies, and wait for the next time. As they say, “Four more years”.

The games of “clear and present danger”

I have to stop underestimating the “need” for certain departments in our workplace. Specifically, the need for HR. In the last quarter, fully 10% of the office staff has (or will soon) change. That’s something; for some, who still don’t know the names of those in the building after six months among us, their job just got tougher. For the rest of us, we wonder what new job will end up on the corner of the cubicle.

The secret life

I didn’t remember when, actually. Maybe back in high school, during one of the thousand or more English classes. Or in a book, from the public library. But given that Mr. Thurber actually composed the story in 1939, it had to fit in somewhere on my timeline. Little matter.

The distant sound of barking

While choosing the appropriate laundry cycle, this evening, the machine entered into that warp space where time makes no sense. Kind of like the last five minutes of a major sporting event, I guess. At one point, the counter showed 25 minutes remaining. Thirty minutes later (I heated a pizza, so this was real time), the counter showed 21 minutes remaining. Shortly afterward, 9. Not any more useful than the download indicator in Windows XP.

Considering the value of my accumulation

Getting the snow out of the driveway was a little harder this afternoon. No more soft powder; this was akin to moving an outcrop of rock. Son #3 wondered if we owned a pickax; soon, we may. This is only the beginning of the season, and we’ve already received about a meter of frozen precipitation.

Old songs and bulbs

Now I remember why we all believed in the acoustic guitar, at a certain ago. Blame it on a generation of folk singers. The Kingston Trio. The Limelighters. The Everly Brothers. The Highwaymen. All before my time, barely. But I had TV. And radio. And family. The songs were perfect earworms, every one. Perfectly crafted versions of old folk songs. Right now, PBS is presenting one of their fundraisers, and I’m afraid that my fate is sealed.

Real piracy

In a not-so-subtle reminder to flip up the page on the calendar, TV has started screening Christmas fare. This afternoon, a Jim Carrey adaptation of A Christmas Carol, followed by a Jim Carrey adaptation of the Grinch story. Don’t let your kids join you for these; dark is the new bright. And long. I had time to go for the groceries without missing a beat.
