Egress quest

Recently, I have had messages that leave me suspicious. I may be running out of time.

That’s an interpretation, but last weekend my alarm clock stopped, and today it was the turn of my trusty wrist as a pocket watch. No display. Yes, I realize that batteries wear out. I also reflect on the time-tested (excuse the pun) hourglass. Anyhow, I decided to ignore son #2 with his timely suggestion that I just rely on a cellphone display. I’m not there yet.

So rich, they don’t need (more) money

I think I should go to bed early. Actually, that’s been the feeling since dawn, but there was a work day in between. I’m laying the blame on my sore eye (the distracting one). And the heat, but that too shall pass.

And when he awoke, he wondered…

One day closer to the (long) weekend. Actually, even a short weekend would be welcome. I’ll accept what the calendar offers. The week is dragging right along, and today was a particularly noisy one; the youngsters were in from school, and sitting quietly wasn’t part of the plan. By going home time, my tinnitus was acting up.

Silly politicians

Somehow, the daily news is more fun than most fantasy literature. Here’s a few samples, from today.

At the GOP convention, two delegates had to be ejected after throwing food to the media. Sort of. The two exaamples of conservative decorum were throwing peanuts at a camerawoman from CNN, explaining that this was how they “feed the animals”. I read the headline on BBC, so it is making press outside of a small circle of friends.

Finding the right size of pot

The dream required a bigger pot. And so, without delay, we spent the afternoon trying to find a pot that was big enough.

Fiddler, on the roof, briefly

First day n back from the beach, the priorities have to be set. In order of occurrence, the kitchen must be unearthed, followed by reactivation of the coffee machine. After the caffeine high has passed, life can progress to other things. Baggage. Recycling. Waking son #3 to help move a ladder outside so I can climb on the roof.

A canine version of Pride rock

Back when there were still trains on the Island, and steam was a preferred method, water supplies had to be provided at regular intervals along the right of way. Some years ago, I spotted a modern day photo of an Artesian well, near Harmony. Today, I took a short walk along the trail to where a standpipe (and a plaque) mark the spot. Alas, this is the dry season, so I will have to continue with my act of faith… or wait until the springtime of another year.

Failure to retaliate

Now that the novelty of camping has wound down, we find ourselves comparing notes with other members of the community. Checking to see who has returned. Looking for breaches in the code that binds us together. Helping out. My strength is reputed to involve fixing computers, and the “Can you take a quick look?” requests are starting. Nothing involving commerce; if the mood doesn’t fit, I will suggest another tangent.

Extolling the science of deduction

Oh, the joys of summer, when money can melt away under the merciless sunshine. Seriously. If you happen to be rich enough to have some (as in, greater than one) of the new plastic currency in your wallet, keep things cool. Or accept that your cash might mash.

A scramble for the big save

Along with that wish for a dry summer, there was a certain responsibility; the roof needs new shingles. Today, the contract was signed, although no nails will be driven until after the middle of next month. Still, the urge to stare at other roof cladding as I walked down the street will now lessen. I hope.
