That “being at home” experience

Just watched a movie that surprised me. An “oldie”, in my kids’ terms. A Stephen King tale, expanded and improved.  Shawshank Redemption. And here’s why.

Selling off the foundation to your house

Out to get some air today. The stuff in cans. With what it costs, be glad that you get the breathing kind for free.

Announcing the end (perhaps) of the jet plane debacle

The ebook reader is here to stay. Proof? Well, how about two top-selling authors that are both writing serialized e-fiction? Atwood and Stephenson. There. Proof.

Forget linear travel

The turn was wrong, on so many levels. Actually, on one level, but this is my blog; I can overdo things if I choose. We were on the city bus, on schedule, due to make the connection on the university campus. When the bus driver turned right, early, we all took notice. When he pulled over and parked, we came to attention. Full stop.

Evolving the doggy diet

Getting older confers certain rights. The right to bore our children with stories about how it used to be: “Why, son, they used to sell slide rules in the school store, right beside scribblers”. Or, as children react: “Huh?” I’ve ready to extend that right to family pets.

The intense version of life – two dogs in one house

Given that we are trying to keep two dogs in a relative state of calm (relative is relative), and the oversight by all involved concerning purchases of packages candy, this is a lights out kind of evening. You see, there may be people in disguise going door to door, and if our house looks boring, they may pass by. So far, only one knock, so the plan is working.

Testing the dog’s patience

From where I sit, the trick to getting a lot of work completed is to take things in small doses. Spoonful sized, if you will.  That way, nothing gets hurt along the way, and the day doesn’t stretch out endless before you.

Get back in your own lane

Each morning, my bus travels uphill and around a gentle curve for the final kilometer before reaching the city centre. Three lanes of traffic; two for the gang that travel solo in their chariots and one for the crowd (bus, 3 to a car, etc). Exception to note; for the last few weeks there has been a certain disregard for the “reserved lane”, which slows everything down. Until this morning.

Need better cage clips

Further proof that we see the world in a very different way from the dog that co-resides. While we rejoiced at the installation of the new windows, the ones that would make his egress difficult, he never noticed the effort.

The individuality of the dogs in our lives

For the last quarter of a century (going back to the arrival of son #1), I’ve been growing a tree. A virtual one, with leaves that represent people. Yes, genealogy is my addiction. Nothing like making a new link. I’ve gone from tiny pieces of paper, to files stored on diskettes that are now obsolete, to whatever comes along. This evening, I downloaded and configured a simple Android app, and my data has migrated to another platform. Painlessly. In a world where everyone wants their own branded manner of doing things, the family tree people have a standard. Go, GEDCOM, go!
