And morning came, and they looked out on the desolation, and wondered “What have we wrought?” Another election, and the only analogy I can apply is that we arrived at the buffet after heavy noontime traffic. We could still fill our plates, but all the good morsels were gone. We ended up with a plateful of leftovers. Three elections in a row, so we’ve proven that no matter what the level of government, the people make choices that defy reason. A plateful of leftovers, barely warm.

It’s been almost a week since the gang in Ottawa rang the budget bell, and the thing is still ringing. I spent a couple of hours this afternoon tuned in to Cross Country Checkup, where almost everyone was somewhat dissatisfied, each for a different reason. I guess that’s one result of governing by obfuscation.

The current provincial campaign has been a budget bluster from start to finish (please, let it finish!). Each group out-promising to outspend the other. Each group just a little bit better able to put the finger on the pulse of our needs. Not nearly enough cash to do the job properly, but if there were just a few pennies more, miracles would happen.

The election has begun. The advance polls are open today, wherein those who detest standing in line with a group of strangers on “the real day” can show up a week early and mark a ballot form. I guess that anyone who goes early does not count among the undecided in the various polls, which currently show the three major parties (provincially) running a dead heat. I am decided, and I have made my choice.

There, the evening’s entertainment is over. Might as well get some warm milk and head off to bed. The provincial campaign debate with three of the better than two dozen political parties on the floor has just ended. Yawn… I’m very sleepy.

Another Sunday night, another election campaign, another presentation of Tout Le Monde En Parle. A political leader as the headliner guest, carefully saying nothing about everything. What an image; a very careful bull in a china shop. Nothing broken, because nothing is moving.

The local political campaign is well underway; the real stories have all been told and we’re moving on to the fringe content in the media. If you are new to the wiles of the political fringe, then please cover your (politically) virgin ears for the rest of this tale.

One of “my” online newspapers is carrying an open letter to parents today, explaining a policy decision from yesterday. At least they didn’t dilly-dally on getting the press release out. Allegedly (what a strange word to describe actually) the local school board in a central Ontario area decided to cancel school buses yesterday due to cold weather and blowing snow. For the safety of the students.

The newspaper this morning carried a short article with a telling statistic; as we prepare to choose a new(er) government, at least provincially, we have three dedicated leaders. All available for duty. All keen. All with NO other job experience in their lives. With the smiles that beamed out from the front page I was left wondering if these people are facing a vacation or vocation.

The first signs of the impending race appeared just after dawn. The premature exhibition of adequiste posters on various utility poles in the upper town guaranteed that the “best real estate” belongs to the early bird, because the writ didn’t drop until close to lunch time.
