Vacation or vocation
The newspaper this morning carried a short article with a telling statistic; as we prepare to choose a new(er) government, at least provincially, we have three dedicated leaders. All available for duty. All keen. All with NO other job experience in their lives. With the smiles that beamed out from the front page I was left wondering if these people are facing a vacation or vocation.
Seriously. We do accept new people in most professions, but we also don’t hand them the top job until they’ve shown some basic skills. Or until they’ve shown that Dad owns the company. (For the record, this is not a sexist remark; other than Belinda, who else can you think of in the father-daughter connection, and as for mothers, Oedipus covered that one long ago). So we accept that a newbie shouldn’t get the starring role in most job situations.
And then along come the anointed class we refer to as politicians. The etymology shows an evolution (devolution) from the term politics: Politics is the science of good sense, applied to public affairs. Do you see a problem emerging here? Good sense. Common sense. Politician. Unless you subscribe to the philosophical view that common sense is innate, the idea of putting a leader with NO WORK EXPERIENCE in place to run a government a flaw or two.
We have a few weeks for a miracle to happen. Do you believe in miracles, too?
