The inevitable evaluation
Seems I underestimated the power of social media: a quick email from my new ISP, confirming an improved install date. Now, that was fast!

My scientifically able friends have tried, over the years, to explain why mess increases. I know, a law of some sort. In the layman’s vernacular, mess is natural.

When the bank officer asked what the SWIFT code might be for our transaction, and if we would be working in Canadian currency, I knew we had wandered into uncharted territory.

The talking heads needed more than three hours to tell the tale. This is election day on the Island, and with just about all the counting completed, there will be continuity in the colours. Liberals are still in a majority, albeit diminished. Two of the four party leaders did not “win” their seats, which means weeks of posturing ahead. And the Green party entered into the books (historical or otherwise), by placing the “Happy Dentist” into the assembly. All in all, good fun.

I’m finally old enough to stop believing in one of the major myths. Much bigger than any of the ones with benevolent gift bestowers; the bunnies and flying elk. No, I am ready to forego the “big one” which presents the world as an us vs them. Forget the flags, or songs that make people stand (for no rational reason).

Right now, I’ve got the achy arms and legs of someone who has done too much physical labour in too short a stretch of time. I now understand why I have zealously avoided moving. I now also realize that my parents were tough folk; our family, over a period of less than fifteen years, managed to change address no less than nine times!

Today, we prepared for tomorrow. Great slogan; fit for a political bumper sticker. In my case, a simple nod to the others who are involved in getting the house done. The money machine required that I twist the crank, but all seems to be working now. One more element in my restless nights taken care of.

Worm, beware! The robin is afoot! Spotted my first red predator this morning, although I may have heard one last evening. In any case, that’s the sign that spring is also afoot. Better to trust nature than something as constructed as a calendar.

One of the catch phrases offered to excuse the efforts of our elected officials is “All politics is local” (sic). I’m like to add to that a rider: “and my neighbour is an idiot”. Seriously. Sadly. How else to get through the day, when at every turn we learn that the representative class does not do so.

Our legal system rests, in large part, on a simple premise. If I say one thing, and you say something diametrically opposite, then one of us is wrong. Up to a certain point, society accepts the air of argument that ensues. Beyond that point, the two parties appear in a court of their peers, both swear to tell the truth; one is shown to be incorrect and we apply penalties.
