The chorus was back this evening. OK, a solo artist from the chorus. Maybe the group will perform a bit later, as the moon gets higher in the sky. And against all odds, I managed to record a few short bursts of song. The odds live here, and when silence is a virtue, they want to provide a counterpoint. Silly; they don’t even know the words.

I guess it’s a question of perspective. This morning, a flight into Halifax didn’t end as planned. When asked, the airline described the situation as a “hard landing”. The passengers, perhaps more involved, used the alternative descriptive: “crash”. The plane (not interviewed as of press time) seems to be missing an engine, and landing gear, and a nose, and the important part of one wing. As I said, perspective.

Following my plan, I stayed up late last evening. Past my normal bedtime. And although the intention was there, I didn’t stay up as long as I had hoped. Try to imagine watching a curling match, direct from Japan. By the sixth end, I was nodding off between each stone. Not for long, but hardly what my body would have permitted when I was younger. I might be in the golden years, if I can remain awake long enough to profit.

Back when my life was under the thumb of a dictatorial alarm clock, breaking my sleep pattern was not done. Not on purpose, at least. There were emergencies, and interruptions, but usually I began and ended the sleep period in concert with my working life.

Faced with a request for something different on the menu, I decided to go with a standard. Ribs. The Scotties is set up with an interesting format: round robin followed by elimination playoffs. Gives a team with a weak moment a chance to regather forces. Tonight, as the announcer said, “It’s Monday night in Moose Jaw.” And for me, a few hours of really great spectator-curling (should be an Olympic event…)

For those involved in a substantial storm down east, I am with you in spirit. Seriously. I would have my shovel in standby mode, waiting for the winds to stop moving the target around (and around and around). Here, we’ve got nothin’!

My take on winter is that you have to have a few traditions. Apart from piling and re-piling accumulated precipitation. Or avoiding near occasions of frostbite.

Past half time. It passed. I wonder if Mr. Kravitz minded that he had less time on stage than a pair of land sharks. And did Katy have a harness, or is just so perfectly in balance with the universe that gravity didn’t matter?

If son #1 happens to check in here (instead of partying like you are on a tropical beach), rest easy. Your pipes have not exploded in the -40C temperatures you happen to have avoided. Carry on.
